Please help: liquid diet
Wendy.. I know JUST how you feel!
The first 3-5 days are the worse for the liquid diet. I was told the reason for feeling so icky, weak, and dizzy is because your body is burning your carbs out of the liver. After a few days you will feel fine.. and it gets better! Pretty soon you will hardly feel all that hungry.. just head hunger. What are you drinking for 'nutrition'? Protein shakes?? Carnation Instant Breakfast? Anytime I felt a hunger pang (growls) coming on.. I'd fuel up on some CIB (my surgeon instructed me to drink 5 8oz. servings a day at minimum.)
You CAN get through this! It's a small sacrafice for the end results!
What CIB? I was told 4 shakes of Optifast, plus sugar free Jello, broth, and no sugar/no calorie/no carbinated drinks. Basically it's a 100 g protein diet, 800 calories. The Optifast is just foul. I just need this light-headedness to go. I can *almost* deal with hunger, not the headaches and dizziness. Thanks for the post and all the information you can give me. Don't know what I would do without this forum.
Call your surgeon's office and tell them you're having a tough time with Optifast. They may let you try other products.
A couple suggestions:
CIB is Carnation Instant Breakfast. Try the no sugar added variety.
My favorite protein shakes that are filled with vitamins are Muscle Milk Light (any flavor) and EAS Myoplex Light (a bit thick, but after the first swallow it tastes like chocolate pudding). I haven't tried the powders, just the pre-made shakes.
Good luck!
