10 day liquid diet...
Hello to everyone, especially my fellow May Babies!! What's with this 10 day liquid diet? I've been reading a lot of posts mentioning it, but I know nothing. My surgery is Lap RNY set for 5/29 with pre-op appt. the week before on 5/22. The only think I've been directed to do is liquid diet & milk of mag the day before. Anyone wanna fill me in? Thanks!
P.S. I am sooooooo nervous! Only 3 weeks away now!
Hey April! I asked the same question on the PA message forum since several folks were talking about going to their PATs and then being on the liquids. At my consult, my doctor checked the shape and the firmness/looseness of my stomach and said to start cuting back on sugars, fats and quantities in order to get at least 10 pounds off. She said this would help with manipulation and all when she goes in. My surgery is the 23rd and my PATs are Weednesday, the 9th and I have lost 14 pounds so I am assuming I will not have to do a liquid diet.
I'm excited but I am starting to realize that the 23rd will be here before I know it. Hoping my excitement continues and leads only to a little anxiousness.

Hey April!
All bariatric programs have different requirements. Mine requires a 10 day liquid diet. I meet with a nutritionist on Tuesday to go over the requirements, although I know several people who have gone through my program (and the handbook they gave me at the pre-op class this past Thursday also explains it) say basically the liquid diet is limited to:
- Skim Milk (plain)
- Skim Milk mixed with Carnation Instant Breakfast
- Protien Shakes (Boost, Ensure, Slim Fast)
- Broths (like chicken, beef, etc - you can even buy soups like Campbells Chicken Noodle and just strain everything leaving the broth)
- Sugar Free Jello
- Sugar Free Popscicles (great when you get that need to chew)
- Water, coffee, tea
- Crystal Light
- Sugar Free Kool-aid
The purpose of the liquid diet is to eliminate the fat around and shrink the liver, making it easier for the surgeon to do the surgery lap.
Good luck!

My prep was a 14 day to-do. For 7 days I had two protein shakes and one meal, like a Lean Cuisine, WW, or South Beach frozen meal. And of course all the sf liquids. The second half was all liquids, four protein shakes a day and all the sf liquids I wanted (goal towards 64oz/day). Tomorrow, Monday, is the day before my surgery and it's no more protein shakes, just all liquids and then nothing after midnight.
Every center/surgeon is different. The nut told me that when you loose weight quickly, the first place you loose it is the fatty deposits in and around the liver. I'm a nurse and didn't know that handy little tidbit!! So, the goal is to shrink the liver so as to make the lap manipulation easier on the surgeon and negates the possibility of having an open incision.
Everybody (re:doctors) in the medical profession have varying opinions about what works and what doesn't for any and all situations. As long as your surgeon is tried and true, than he/she knows what they are talking about and that is just the routine they choose for their patients.
Good luck and try not to be too nervous. Someone from my state board had a great suggestion for keeping your mind occupied and off the surgery: start clearing out your closets and drawers of your off season clothes, as they will be too big next season! Great idea, huh!!!!! Best wishes ~~Elena
