My doctor is going to do the Gastric Bypass and a ring both. Has anyone had both done. Just curious!

Not yet, but that's the plan for me. My doctor requires a 4th week on the liquid diet afterward which is a little problematic for me but I'll just have to make it work. I wonder if I can get my blender through airport screening?!?!?! -- T.Rob

I think the Ring and RNY both are the new surgery that they are doing now. The RNY is excellent but I guess after a while people can tolerate sweets and start gaining weight back so they have changed it. My doctor said that by doing both the ring and RNY it will control consumption intake as well as sugar and fat intake and it has been more successful. I am glad that I waited until now so I get the latest surgery. I am excited. When is your surgery?

Hi Esther, I've been to one support group meeting and the responses there seem to confirm your thinking on this. Most people who are doing RNY or have recently had RNY indicated they picked the ring too. In my case, it was pure dumb luck that I got to this point when I did and can get the ring. I had to get a new insurer, which meant I had to change jobs. And if I wanted to buy my first house, I needed to do that before I changed jobs (13 year work history vs. a few months would not have looked good on the loan app). All that set me back 3 years which was enough time for my Dr. to get a bunch of these completed and feel really comfortable with them. When I showed up in the Dr. office, I'd never heard of the ring but after reading up on them, it seemed the way to go. I don't want mechanical failures and I don't want to develop a tolerance. But if I had known, I might have waited a while. I was watching that stomach pacemaker gadget. Very promising, but it's too long of a wait. I see you are May 7th. I'm May 29th so a few weeks after you. Good luck with your's. I'll be looking for your posts when you feel well enough to get back online. -- T.Rob

Hi Friend, Where did you read about the ring? I would like to look it up. I will keep you posted on how the surgery went after I get home and feel up to getting on the computer. May 29th is not far behind me. I know you are as excited and nervous as I am. You are a good looking man so watch out women after you become a "LOSER". We can be strong for each other. Your Friend, Esther

Hi Esther, Sorry for the late reply. If you read my profile page, you might know that I've been at a conference in Las Vegas and so haven't been keeping up on emails as much as I usually do. To find the info, I Googled around for terms like "fobi pouch", "banded RNY" and "silastic band gastric bypass", which led me to web sites like bariatric-surgery-info.com. There are some helpful tricks to search terms on Google for when you want more authoritative info. For example when searching for medical info I like to know what the government web sites have to say. You can limit your search results to certain domains or just top-level-domains like .gov quite easily with the site: qualifier like so: fobi pouch band site:gov In this case, the only results returned are on government sites like National Institute of Health (nih.gov). You are the second person on this forum to tell me I'm "good looking". I can honestly say that I see it in *your* picture but not mine. All these years of being told I'm fat and unattractive seem to have caught up with me. And it's retroactive. Looking at the photos on my profile page from when I was a much skinnier kid I don't see an attractive guy, even in hindsight. Perhaps it is a common thing in our community but something I find very ironic is this: the experiences I've had throughout my life have made me more compassionate toward others, less judgemental, willing to look past stereotypes of body shape, color and ethnicity, to embrace people of all types and see their beauty and humanity. In short, I've learned to treat people the way I wish they'd treated me. Except for me. Somehow when I look at myself in the mirror I see the things I've been called and the way I've been treated by others. This is something I'm going to have to come to grips with and, I suspect, will be harder than any external changes I can make. I suppose it's why I come back here all the time - the community mutually embrace and support one another like nothing else I've ever seen. OK, starting to get a little mushy here. This was supposed to be about the ring and I hijacked your thread! Go Google something now whilst I pull myself back together. -- T.Rob
