Pre surgery liquid diet?

I'm a little confused here. The hospital I'm using doesn't require you to be on any special diet before surgery but most people I talk to from other places have to be on liquids for at least 2 weeks prior. Something about shrinking the liver. Is this necessary or what?

I've heard of a lot of people on here not having to go on pre-op diets, have you asked why? If your liver isn't 'small' on surgery day, it may get in the way of having the surgery laprascopically. Might be something to ask your surgeon

My doctor doesn't require any pre-op diet either. I'm considered a "lightweight" (yeah right) and she doesn't seem concerned about the whole liver shrinking thing. I thought at first it was because of the lowish starting bmi (37) but then I learned that the whole Bariatric center I'm going to doesn't require this. I don't know why the difference, but my hospital is a Center of Excellence, and my surgeon has done something along the line of 7000 procedures, so I'm trusting her. I think a lot of places require it, but apparently a lot don't either. They do, however, say that any weight you lose pre-op will only make things better for you during surgery, and I have lost about 9 pounds so far anyway. Not really trying to, though honestly. I guess all this *thinking* about losing weight is rubbing off on me subconsciously or something! LOL I'd say give your surgeon's office a call and ask about it and see what they say. And otherwise just enjoy the fact you don't have to mess with it... that's what I'm doing! Kim
