Pre-Op suggestions

Hi Everyone, I was just cleared for surg. (roux & Y). My date is 2 weeks from yesterday. My Dr. doesn't require any special meal instructions until 2 days before surg. I could use some advice from people who have already had the surg. on how to make the transition smoother. Should I start with the liquid foods sooner to get used to the whole new diet? What about exercise and getting prepaired for post-op? What do you see in hind-site that would have helped or what worked for you? Thanks everyone for your help.

i was so glad that I had been walking every day for over a month leading up to surgery. i'm sure it made those first walks right after surgery easier. as far as the diet goes, you'll have plenty of time to adjust after the surgery. i had rny tuesday, came home last night, and really haven't had much appetite yet. eating mostly on a schedule. i'm up at 4am right now cause the pain meds wore off, so i'm having an ounce of milk with some crushed tylenol, than hopefully back to bed. start walking, and just keep going after surgery. so many people have said this to me, and i see the truth in it now.

My surgery was RNY too done laparscopically on Apr 18th. The only thing I had to do prior was to not eat or drink after midnight the night before my surgery. Like someone already said you will have time to adjust after the surgery so I wouldn't worry about changing your diet right now. After surgery I was scared to eat or drink and you're not hungry anyway. Once you start to eat believe me you will get sick of fluids soon enough - why start now if you don't have to. The more you move after surgery the better - it will help the gas move and help your system (bowels, etc) get moving again. And the more you move in the hospital the less stiff you will be. Once allowed ice chips were my best friend - I really relied on ice to get my water the first few days until I was able to stomach others. Good luck - just do what the docs say and you'll do great. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Just have a positive attitude. Not sure if your surgery will be open or lap - just take it easy and move as much as your body will allow - don't push to hard. Carolyn
