Couldn't get the link to work, but there has been a boy in the news over here, with TV programmes about him too, who is 8 and weighs 12 stone (168lbs). I don't know any details, but apparently Social Services want to take him into care, and are 'talking' with the parents. I hope he and his family get the help they need, in whichever form that needs to take...

please keep in mind this is an ANDI HOT BUTTON! My son is 121 pounds which makes him a roundling at age 11. I make him breakfast, he buys another one in school, I make him a good lunch, he buys another full lunch in school. The school won't help me but they sure as heck want their money fast when he charges lunch. I decided i won't pay the bill until the last day of school, this way, they won't allow him to charge anything additional. I said why are you extending an 11 year old boy credit, he has no job so it's up to me to pay you, cut that out?! We took the boy to a nutritionist and all she did was point to the mother (me) and say what are you doing wrong. I said i've got two kids who are healthy weight how is it that i only feed this one kid crap? There are always 2-3 different kinds of fruit in my house, sugar free pudding, carrots, celery, cucumbers, red peppers....there are healthy choices to be made. I've got baked chips for snack and cookie packages but you can choose one if you have a fruit with it for your lunch snack. This woman kept going well "as the mother you can" this and "as the mother you can" i said were you trained by Freud, it's not ALL about the mother, some of it is the kid some is the environment.......ANDI

In the newpaper report I saw today, his mom says he asks for snacks all day long, which she gives him, as he keeps on and on at her, and all he likes to eat are fries and chips so that's what she feeds him!! Sounds to me like mom needs educating, if this is a true/acurate report. However, I agree with Andi that the school and health care professionals should take responsibilty too. Why is it that this problem has been allowed to get this bad. His health care professionals would have seen him before now and should have flagged this. Andi, I am so frustrated for you with this nut you saw. No help at all!! Is there someone else you can go see that will be more help? Has your son tried the gym you have tried out? Maybe there's something there he can get into, exercise wise? Mindyou, I was very overweight as a child even though I was extremely active and fit (I did ballet, netball team (like basket ball), hockey team (not ice!!), competative swimming). This is something I worry about with my daughter Millie. Will she take after her dad's eating habits or mine?? Something I'm watching (without her knowing though). So far she's ok.

My one son is over weight and it is a constant battle with the school to keep them from giving him tons of extra stuff. when he was in the hospital for a year he went from a size 8 pant to a husky 16. they told me they could not make him monitor his food. It was his right to eat if he wanted to. When I got him out of there he dropped a lot of weight just because I didnt let him sit and eat all day. I remember coming in one time and he had a whole box of donuts in front of him he was eating.. I was really mad as you can surely guess. Because he has a one on one at school, they try a little harder to monitor his food but she tells me all the time that they have cooking classes and such and it is a battle with other staff to understand he can not have all this junk food. I know exactly how u feel about that.
