Lets talk about carbs
Ok. so i avoid carbs like the plague but I notice everyone is eating them. I do all proteins.. except for this recent obsession with pretzels.. I just dont touch them. I crave them alot but I dont touch them.. just like the pretzels.. I dont want to have more obsessions to worry about. at 8 months out I have not eaten a piece of bread, sandwich, pasta of any kind. Is this a good or a bad thing? Do I need some carbs in my diet to loose weight or is it best to stay on the all protein diet. I know there are still some carbs in protein things.. I think.. I just know I eat meat... cheese.. meat.. cheese.. and some veggies.. they have some carbs in them.
So should I be putting more carbs in my diet? I have noticed that the pretzels dont seem to be slowing down my weight loss but I am scared to death they will.. I dont even like the way they taste.. i just want them.. Help...
Carbs ... I bet you'll get a big debate over this one!!!
My dietician strongly urges a well-balanced diet that includes carbs. She told me I "should" get in about 100 grams of carbs in a day. I usually get about that amount. However, I do have issues with very low blood sugars if I don't eat any carbs. If I were to eat an egg for breakfast, within an hour my blood sugar would be very, very low. So I have to balance a little bit of carbs along with my protein.
That being said, my dietician still recommends all her patients eat carbs, mostly whole grains. She just believes in a well-balanced plan that someone can follow for life, whi*****ludes healthy carbs like whole grains ... fiber being a good benefit! This is what she told me and I am not a dietician so please don't flame me!
I'm sure everyones' dieticians have told them different things. I do know that if I go overboard on carbs, then I want more and I tend to feel more head hunger. So I still try and get in my proteins first and then follow with some fruit or whole grains to help keep my blood sugars steady.

I had the band, but I do the same thing as you. I stay to a low carb/low fat/high protein diet. The only real carbs I get are from suger free or weight control oatmeal and an occasion spoonfull of peanut butter. I also have not had a single bite of bread, pasta, fired foods, etc since my WLS. I have lost 138 pounds in just short of 8 months and my bloodwork is good for what its worth.
All I know is that the more I eat carbs the more I crave them!! So consequently I try to avoid them as much as I can, but do still have small portions occassionally. It's the snacky carbs that I don't like - they are just too easy to chow down on and are what I think of as empty calories. Sadly these are the ones I find hard to avoid
I'm interested to know if anyone has info on the GI diets - this may help us sort out 'good' carbs from 'bad' carbs, if there is a difference and if there are good and bad?
My surgeon's plan calls for no carbs (except milk and fruits****il 75% of excess weight is gone. BUT I haven't followed that. I tried and I try. But like Ruth said, once I ate those first carbs the carb cravings came back like crazy. Now I limit it. I ALWAYS eat protein firsth, then veggie/fruit, THEN carbs. Snacking is where most of my carbs come in: a few wheat thins or triscuits with my cheese at snack time or maybe a little popcorn at night. When we go out to eat I will eat a bite of baked potato or bread/yeast roll/Red Lobster's IRRESISTIBLE cheese biscuits, BUT one bite is usually plenty to satisfy that "want".
With my surgeon's plan after 75% of excess weight is gone "good" carbs are added back in. I don't have the recommended list with me at work, but basically, its the "not white" stuff.
Its all about moderation for me. If I feel deprived I'm going to have a really hard time. However, having just a bite or 2 of something I'm craving has been working very well for me.
