Kat's Protein Theory

there are two kinds of Proteins: Soft easily digested Proteins and Sturdy harder to digest Proteins. Soft Proteins: whey based protein, protein isolate, protein concentrate, cheeses, eggs Sturdy Proteins: hen, turkey, pork, beef, lamb it is my proposition that the body must ingest 4 times the amount of calories / volume of soft proteins as it does in sturdy proteins to extract the equivalent amount in protein. my proposition is that all things being equal, an ounce of soft protein is digested 4 times faster than an ounce of sturdy protein. in order to absorb the same amount of protein from soft protein foods, a person would have to consume 4 time as much. Whereas if a person were to consume only sturdy proteins, they would consume 1/4 as much to meet the same daily nutrient needs. I propose that it takes 4 times as long to digest a sturdy protein and in doing so, our bodies spend 4 times a long breaking it down and are thus able to utilize it 4 times greater than the same volume of soft protein. just like oatmeal and orange juice, we have a complex binding when we combine leafy greens with sturdy proteins, that give our bodies a greater benefit of the sum of the two, if consumed alone. by consuming leafy greens in conjunction, we increase the absorption and utilization of the irons in the lean meats.

Kat, my doc is a proponent of eating your protein (as opposed to drinking) and eating 'hard' proteins as much as possible. i'm glad you posted because i have been thinking of something that you posted recently regarding your calorie intake. you mentioned that you cannot lose weight eating 800 cals a day. has your dr. given you an idea of what your maintenance caloric intake will be? i'm just curious. at 6 months out my doc wants me at about 1200 cals a day. i average about 1000 but try to get in more. i am still losing weight. for the last 2 months i have been averaging. he expects my maintenance intake to be 1400-1600 a day based on height and age and ideal weight. he believes strongly that we must do everything possible to normalize our metabolism and maintain this the rest of our lives through proper nutrition and exercise. i feel completely satisfied and cannot imagine that with this wonderful tool that will change too much. i am appreciative for a doctor that truly wants me to eat like a normal thin person and be able to eat to live, but yet still enjoy my food. thanks, deb

according to my doctor on my last visit last week, when I am 5 lbs from goal, I can include carbs like fruits to slow things down. when I am at goal, I can increase my volume, still eating only three meals a day, focusing on hard proteins first, and then other stuff, but I should be eating a fist size of food each meal. which is about 8 oz. he has not given me a caloric goal, just a volume one. he still expects me to maintain my proteins first, leafy greens second, and then fill in filler with the rest, but essentially three 6-8oz meals a day. currently, I am still only able to get in 1.125 oz of a pork chop, and NOTHING else and I am 'stuffed' for hours. so logging in my intake in fit-day, on a good day I am consuming 400 calories, if that doubles in the next 6 months , I expect that to be a maximum of 800 calories a day to maintain. I talked to another mini-pouch client, and she is 2 years out and can eat 8 oz, which is one slice of pizza. I can not imagine getting in a whole slice, but she swears that she can. right now I can get down a crust. heehee my doctor fully expects me to eat like a normal thin person, there will be no 'restrictions' after goal, other than sturdy protein first, leafy green veggies to lock in those nutrients, and everything else like vits and stuff. to the point that he doesn't want me on liquid proteins, shakes and concoctions. he has deliberately not set a calorie limit, but I am finding that my own body has a limit of volume that if I adhere to the 'nutritional guidelines' keeps me lower on the calories than if I were to go more into 'other stuff' I would be eating not empty calories, but less effective calories. I can see where the goal is less processed, less refined, more 'natural' food stores. in quantities that 'normal' people eat. which I swear to this day, I was not 'over eating' heehee

You're smokin' crack! I love ya, but that just sounds crazy. You want to hear my theory? I've researched the profiles of people who have very impressive long term before & after photos...people who don't look gaunt, their hair looks vibrant and healthy long term, their skin looks healthy 5, 10 or more years post-op. Nearly every single person I've researched supplements with protein shakes. The fact is, I cannot eat enough sturdy protein per day to keep me looking and feeling healthy. I will continue to drink my protein because I need it. Love ya, Darlene
