Throwing up? When is it happening too much?
I, like everyone I guess on this board, am about 6.5 months out (May 10th, 2006). I have been pretty careful about what I eat (not too much sugar, no greasy foods, limiting the carbs, not too much fat, ect), but I eat just about everything. I have noticed that I am getting sick after almost every meal. I don't know if I am eating too much or if it is just the foods that I am having a hard time with (I should be more careful I guess), but after almost every meal I feel the need to throw up. A lot of times it is self-induced, but it is because I feel so awful! I don't think that it is psychosamatic, but I guess it could be. Has anyone else had this experience? I have an appointment with my doctor in a couple of weeks and will bring this up to him, but I don't really know how to address it...am I bulimic or is the food that I'm eating making me sick? Help!
Hi Jenn! Well since you are watching your sugars & fats, the only things I can suggest is to go back to measuring your portions or to go back to the mushy food stage to see if that helps if it does then it is your portion sizes!! If not I think I would call the Dr & let them know I am having this problem!! I would not wait for the appt in a few weeks!!No sense in being miserable & we have to be our own advocates after wls!!We know our bodies better than anyone & usually have a six sense when something is not right!!! I was very nauseated after my wls(my research said this is normal)but 12 days after surgery I had a small bowel blockage & had to have another surgery to correct it!!I tell you this not to scare you but to emphasize(sp?) that we MUST be our own advocates I knew deep down something was not right but let it ride 12 days cause I didn't want anything to be wrong & my research said nausea could be a side effect right after wls. I am perfectly well now & can eat anything on my surgeons list with no problems but if I overfill my pouch I feel the strong need to never do but until the food passes I am miserable! Hope I have been of some help & didn't scare you!!Follow your intuition!!Do what you know is right!!& if its still no better call your dr. Hope you are feeling better soon!!!~Missy~

Hey Jen -
You are not alone on the throwing up boat. I have pretty much thrown up since I was released from the hospital. I don't get sick on liquids, but pretty much everytime I eat I feel the urge to throw up. I also have thought lately about maybe it is a problem in my head, but it really isn't. Have you been checked for an ulcer? 2 months ago my surgeon put me on meds for an ulcer. They do work as they reduce the acid in your stomach and I don't get sick nearly as much as I used to. However I still do get sick at least every third day.
Do you dump? I have come to the conclusion that people are either dumpers or pukers. I have "dumped" before off to much sugar, but generally if I eat something that might cause someone to dump I just throw it up. I do get sick eating good things to. I don't eat to fast, to much, a lot of time I just feel the urge to throw up.
Let me know what you doc says.
Josh
I find that it is food that I am not used to. I have not puked in ages. but friday night, I had the chicken and the salad at a church dinner. no problem. I had the pumpkin pie / pudding / brown sugar / whipped cream thingy, and with a Tablespoon I was in the bathroom and , so I went in search of ingredients list. it was the tons of brown sugar that did me in and possibly the pudding, both are new to my 'list', i have had pumpkin pie without a problem
I think that our tolerances change periodically. I find that I can tolerate somethings, but the 'fourth' serving is what puts me over (even if it is not on the same day) ultimately I stick to my safe list of things to eat and rarely deviate.
I know that many times it if is a safe food, then the problem was that I was not 'paying attention' when I ate, and I woofed, didnt chew well, and or ate too much too quickly and gracious. I feel wretched.
if I do not 'talk on the phone' I am better about getting in my 'normal' amount and not feel over stuffed and the need to
