I don't get automatic blood test to monitor my nutrients levels so am going to have to request specific tests from my family doctor who is not a WLS specialist. Does anyone know what specif tests I need to request - the official names? I want to check my B12 & other essential nutrients to ensure I am doing OK. Thanks Ruth

Hi Ruth - I think the ones you might want to check are: albumin (sp?), iron, B12, TSH, cholesterol/lipids, fasting glucose. That's probably the minimum to have checked. I don't know about other tests. Take care, Heather

Hey Ruth, I have this awesome hospital...Vanderbilt University Medical center and I can view my labs online at anytime with a password....so these are the exact tests from there. CBC-whi*****ludes iron and white blood cells---include white blood cell differential Basic Metabolic Panel-including sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide, glucose and calcium Complete Metabolic Panel-these include all your liver functions...albumin and what not Routine Chems-Magnesium Blood Nutrition Panel-I don't know much about this one, but it's in there every time I go in, it includes Vitamin A, B-12, B-6, Folate, Vitamin D PTH/Bone-I have no idea what this is, but it's by itself and not in the above catergories Hope this helps Rachael

(thanks to google) Some Post-Op Blood Tests to have run every 3-6 months: Metabolic Profile: Sodium Potassium Chloride Glucose Insulin BUN Creatnine Total Protein Albumin Total Bilirubin Alkaline Phosphatase Aspartate Aminotransferase Lipid Profile: Cholesterol HDL LDL Triglycerides Cholesterol/HDL ratio ATL (SPGT) GGT LDH Phosphorus-inorganic Uric Acid Hemogram with Platelets B-12 & Folate Iron Profile: Iron Transferrin TIBC % Saturation Vitamins A & D (25- hydroxy) Thyroid Panel: T3U T4 FTI TSH Zinc Magnesium Ferritin Calcium CBC Total Testosterone, DHEAS, Androstenedione, Free Testosterone, TGB, Prolactin, LH, and FSH ALSO: A baseline Dexascan will enable you to monitor that your calcium is doing it's job. Have one done right before surgery or right after surgery to establish a "baseline". Then have a follow-up scan done a annually to monitor this. Getting your doctor to use "hypovitaminosis" and/or "malabsorption syndrome" for the diagnosis codes may help with the Dexascan being covered by your insurance company.
