Dumping with a banana???

This morning I think I had my first dumping episode!! I had just taken a few bites of my weight control oatmeal. In the oatmeal I had cut up about 1/4 of a very ripe banana. At the time I wondered...hummm, does a banana's chemistry change when it's going through the overripe fermenting stage??? Well...let me tell you, it wasn't 5-10 minutes after eating my first bite and I thought I was going to pass out. I was breathing so hard, my hands, face, lips, arms and stomach were all tingling, my husband wanted to call 911. We took my blood pressure and it was 109/60, kinda low. Even when I laying down with elevated feet, I thought I was going to pass out. Finally, I drank a small can of apple juice, and within 5 minutes I was feeling better. My husband was throwing clothes on, preparing to take me to the ER, he was so freaked out. Then I remembered another banana incident...while on vacation I ate a few bites of banana with my Special K. I got nauseous and light-headed, but it went away quickly. After feeling better and getting brave, I decided to try a few more bites of just the oatmeal, everything was OK, so it must have been the banana!!! If I have a banana reaction, I don't EVEN want to imagine what a piece of candy or a cookie would do to me!!! Anyone else have this kind of reaction???

Oh you poor thing. I'm glad you got through it OK. I had banana shortly after WLS, and was fine - took ages to eat a small piece though, but haven't had any since. I tend to avoid fruit, but don't really know why Maybe you've developed an allergy to bananas?

OY - that does NOT sound like fun!!! I'm glad it went away relatively quickly at least!!! You are right about bananas changing as they ripen. I mean - they TASTE much much sweeter the riper they get...now if they actually have more sugars...I dunno. That would be a good question!!!! Bananas are my friend. I have issues getting enough fiber in - keeping the system on track. So I have a bowl of Bran Buds everyday....they aren't tooooo bad but I cut up 1/2 banana in it everday to make it better and it's never really made me sick. I remember right after surgery I was putting like 1/4 banana in my protein shakes too. It's so weird how everything affects everyone so differently. If definetely sounds like bananas are not your friend!

That was a classic dumping episode. Mine happens on weird things. I went to a fish fry last nite at the American Legion here in the village I live in. Ordered a very small piece of fish and had tartar sauce. The tartar sauce apparently has some sort of corn syrup or something in it and it causes me to dump. Not to the extreme that you did....but had to leave there sortly after eating and became alittle ill and had to lay down. It drains all the energy out of me. I took a 2 hr nap!! This is the 2nd time this has happened from eating tartar sauce so moral of the story for me is...no more tartar sauce. Hope you are feeling better. Kel

Thanks for everyone's input. I had my weight control oatmeal again this a.m., sans banana!! I did cut up about 1/6 of an apple and mixed it with the oatmeal...no reaction. The banana incident was really weird, because I had cut up a banana several other times in the past and eaten it with my oatmeal with no reaction. Anyway, I think I'll leave bananas alone for awile. It was a very scary episode. I didn't feel sleepy afterwards, but for awile there I didn't know if I was going to make it.
