Protien Shakes - Yes or No?

Has anyone else stopped drinking protien shakes? Today is my first day of not having one. Over the past week I'd cut back to 1/2 a shake. I'm noticing that I'm able to eat much more then the start and wondering if I really need to drink the shakes anymore. I track everything I eat on FitDay.com and I'm achieving 50+ grams w/o the shake.

My dr & nut both say no shakes after 8 weeks, that you must eat your protein. There are many others that say you must always drink protein shakes. My dr. agrees with most of the information found in "Pouch rules for dummies". (google and you'll find many links) Basically, he says liquid passes through your pouch much too quickly and subsequently you get hungry much more quickly. But, again there are at least 2 very different point of views on this. Deb

Hi Deb, This is exactly what my doctor and nut say as well. That if I'm able to eat enough protien (which they much prefer) then the shakes are not needed. I just wasn't sure if it was odd that I was able to this far out. I have to agree the liquid passes and leaves me hungry which is why I'm anxious to eat instead of drink in the mornings. Thanks for your reply! Meg

I'm not a shake drinker because I couldn't find any that wouldn't make me gag or throw up. So I eat a protein bar every day, usually for breakfast, just to get it out of the way! I'm still not able to eat very much at a time and meat is difficult for me to eat. So the protein bar helps supplement me. It sounds like you're doing great without the shakes!!! Deanna

I'm in the same boat as Deanna...I still depend on the protein supplements because as you all well know by now I can not tolerate many meats. When I can achieve 50-60g of protein/day by eating, I plan to stop drinking the shakes. I'll probably always keep the bars around simply because they're convenient and with my traveling job sometimes they're a godsend!

I still drink my protein drinks - some days as a just in case, cause I tend to forget to eat (enough) some days - but I definately drink on before my workout for the maximum fat burning action. I read it in a Prevention Magazine that if you drink a protein drink before a workout it is more effective with burning fat. So yes, I do still drink mine at least 3 days a week. Phenom

I met with my Doc last week and told him that I put an Unjury protein scoop every morning in my coffee. He said that I not great, but I told him that I cannot physically eat breakfast (eggs tend to make me sick and I do not think my stomach is awake enough before I have to leave for school). The Doctor said if I make sure that I am only doing one a day, he could live with that. Danice

I CANNOT drink protein shakes. They make me so sick! The same with the protein bars. BLECH! However, I'm still not able to eat enough protein, yet. I made an executive decision last week that I would not drink any more protein shakes and quit obsessing about it. I'll just try to get in as much protein as possible and quit feeeling guilty about not eating enough. I haven't been sick since Saturday night, which was one of my worst days since surgery. I feel and look better than I have in weeks, according to my friends and family. I see my surgeon on Monday and plan on discussing it with him then. We'll see what he says. Good question! *hugsnluv* Phyllis

Wow, I'm really looking forward to being able to ingest enough nutrients via FOOD instead of protein shakes, but my pouchie has a life and opinion of it's own. I still can barely tolerate any solids. Most of my oral intake is liquid, in the form of soups and protein drinks. Pouchie won't even eat yogurt anymore. Whazz up with that??? Cindy
