Update on Liver issues

Hey all. I wrote a month ago about how I was having liver probs after surgery, starting with a liver biopsy during surgery that indicated Steatohepatitis. My liver enzymes progressively got worse and worse after surgery and the plan was to see a hepatologist. That's where I last left you. Yesterday I saw the hepatologist. He seems very confident that I am going to be ok. He says that even though I have Steatohepatitis, the biopsy also showed no fibrosis(the next progression) or scarring. So, he thinks the weight loss will ultimately heal this condition. And, he believes the rapid weight loss is what is causing still elevated liver enzymes and as my weight loss slows, they will decrease. He redrew the labs and in fact, since the last month the enzymes have already gone down!!! My husband was very releaved that a liver specialist said it was going to be ok. Rachael

Racheal that is wonderful news!! As you know I too, had slightly elevated liver enzymes at about 3 months post-op. I just had my blood redrawn on Monday to recheck, so I'll know something next week. After talking to my surgeon's nurse and reading quite a few posts about elevated liver enzymes in WLS, I've decided that probably most post-op WLS patients will have elevated liver enzymes, they just never know it. For one thing, it's asymptomatic, secondly, the liver enzymes are not normally tested either before or after surgery and thirdly, like you said--they seem to normalize after the weight loss slows down. I know you are so relieved, I know I would be. It's pretty scary stuff when they start talking about your liver!!! Wonderful Wonderful news!! I'm soooo happy for you!!!
