Almost 4mo appointment
After reading posts, and myself being discouraged with my pleatu - as most of you probably already know - I made an appointment with my nutrionalist today. She is in the same office as my surgeon so because of how sick I've been I also saw him.
The appointment with my nutrionalist was very valuable. She informed me that I needed to up my caloric intake (I'm between 600-1000 on a given day). I'm not eating enough to lose weight. I also need to let go of the 100 calorie packs (no surprise) because they have nothing good for me. She also suggested I stop working out so much. This really shocked me. Hmph!!
My surgeon is concerend that I"ve lost too much too quickly. This honestly shocked me because I felt like a slow loser compared to some of you. His staff says that the avg. WLS patient they see loses 60% of excess body weight in 12 months. I've lost 58% in 16 weeks. This was an eye opener for me and made me feel much better. My surgeon also feels that I'm obsessing about my weight too much and wants me to see shrink. LOL He gave me a script for bloodwork as he too is concerend about how often I've been ill. He'll follow-up with me again next month.
Hi Megan!
You sound like me at my 3 month appointment! My nutritionist told me to eat more; aim for 1000 calories! And she said to quit working out so much; only go to the gym 3 days per week instead of 5. She also thought I was worrying too much about my portions and wondered why I was so obsessive with my calorie count! But I can honestly see that I do worry about my calories ... any time I go over 600 calories I start wondering if I'm eating too much. My mind knows better but there is a part of me that panicks!
Anyway, you have done a GREAT job! Did your nutritionist give you any ideas on other things to eat?
Deanna
Megan, thanks for sharing. It sounds like your nutritionist told you some of the things mine told me. I can't conceive that I'm actually having trouble eating enough every day. I hadn't thought that maybe I was exercising too much. I go today at 1:00 to my surgeon's office to get a B-12 shot. I'm going to see if I can bend someone's ear about my plateau and get some more advice. It's really so disheartening, going through this LONG period of not losing any weight when you've been used to steadily losing.
I know we don't want to sabotage ourselves in any way, so we'll all do what we need to do to get beyond this stage and move on down the scale. I might need to see a shrink too because I'm starting to obsess too much about this stall as well, lol.
HI!Megan,
I too was discouraged at my 3 mth appointment. When I voiced this to my surgeon,he seemed very surprised & was very reassuring that I am doing Great!!(news to me).He explained(something I already knew but it helped hearing it from him)that as a lightweight(I had 113 lbs to lose)that lost 10lbs before surgery, I"only" had 100lbs to lose & at 3 mths I had lost 40 lbs since surgery so essentially I had lost 40% of my excess weight!!He also said he was not concerned with that number, the number he looks at is the percentage of body fat. At my first appt the percentage of my excess body fat was 112% at my 3mth visit it was down to 70% He thinks I am doing Great!!!Again news to me, cause it feels so slow(again in my research I know slow is good cause the skin has time to bounce back)I do not lose 2,3,4 lbs every week I have noticed I lose in waves 2 wks nothing (so discouraging)then the next week 6 lbs will come off. It is equaling out to be 10-12lbs a month. They (surgeon or nut)still have not given me a caloric intake amount but remain insistant on 60-80 gms protein a day & 64 oz liquid.I usually hit somewhere around 70 on the protein, but struggle with the fluids...Anyways hope this helps!!!& Hope your feeling better soon. ~Missy~
