Hi! I am a newbie to this board, and I am 3 weeks out from having my DS! Things have been going very well. Most of the time I forget I even had surgery! I've been pretty good about taking all my vitamins and drinking throughout the day. I have also surprised myself by actually eating protein 1st! I thought that would be a killer to my carb-loving self! I have lost 26 pounds, and I look forward to the scale moving on down even further! The only problem I have had is slowing down and paying attention to when I am full. I over ate once, and I was uncomfortable for about 2 hours! Ick... I haven't had any nausea or vomiting, and the diarrhea has stopped! Now, it only happens when I eat something that isn't agreeable to the new plumbing. At least it gives me a way to learn about my body's new likes and dislikes! No regrets! I'm eating anything I want to -- I just have to remember protein first and stop when full! LOL Dawn 328/302/140ish?

So glad to have found this forum--I feel like I can relate more closely to your experiences since surgery. My Roux en Y was 5/4. I lost 25 lbs. before surgery and have lost 31 since May 4. It feels slow, but I keep telling myself to be realistic! I retain lots of water for days on end, then my kidneys magically kick in and I'll drop a few pounds. It's frustrating to see the scale go up 2, then down 2, then up 2---you get the picture. I'm older (53) but feel terrific. I've started Yoga classes (wow! what a workout) and have been walking outside or on the treadmill. It's 6:55 p.m. here in NE Florida and it's still 90+ degrees out--ick. I waited until 9:15 last night before going for my walk. I'm off my arthritis medicine all together and my chronic foot pain is gone--that's the best. I'm also finished with one of two BP medications that I've been on for years and years. I hope to be off all meds in the next few months. Unfortunately, I made a terrible choice at the mall a few weeks ago. Just had to try some Chik Fil-a nuggets and apparently I didn't chew them well enough (only got 1 1/2 eaten) and 20 hours later had to go to the ER for fluids after vomitting for hours and hours. The pain was horrible and I ended up being scoped (endoscopy) to get the food out. That experience has taught me to follow my doctor's plan to the letter. I stick with a protein shake in the a.m., followed by as much water as I can tolerate, another protein shake around lunch, more water, and then some protein food (mostly tofu lately) for dinner and more water, of course. I've lost my taste for sweets completely, don't care about red meat (forget chicken - may never eat that again), fish, pasta. I did enjoy some eggplant at our favorite restaurant last week which surprised me totally. No one would have ever described me as a vegetarian before I miss crunchy stuff like crackers and chips, but so far I've been able to avoid them. My family is very supportive and we're all finding new ways to "celebrate" events - new foods, better and more nutritious. All in all, except for my trip to the ER when I was wondering what in the world I had done to myself, I'm thrilled that I've made this life-altering decision. Hope you all are having a great day as big losers.

I had my surgery on May 17th, Lap RNY. I have lost a total of 50 pounds since then. I have not had any problems eating and get my required water in daily. I work out 3 to 5 times a week. I did not need any pain pills after my release from the hospital and was off work only 13 days. In short life is great but I am taking nothing for granted. I will continue to follow my diet and work at the exercise. I also realize that the weight loss will slow down the further I go and will not let that get me down. Absolutely no regrets so far. Hope everyone else does great and don't let those plateaus get you down. Hawkeye Mike

what I have learned, that I am never going to get all my protien, but that is okay. I am never going to get all my fluids, unless that is my full time job for the day. I can eat 1.0 ounce of meat (just about any meat) and .5 ounce of vegetable and then I am painfully stuffed, I have to watch those last three bites to make sure I have 'room' or I am in pain for the next 2-3 hours. sweets and fats are totally out, they usually come back up in 20 minutes or less. I can drink hot herbal teas (unsweetened) easier than any other fluids, but I hate the gurgles as it perkalates thorugh my esophogus, it is pretty noisey. processed lunch meats are 'easy' convenience foods but they cause me horribly embarrasing gas. what a PITA. I still want cheese cake daily. ;) it does come off slowly, but 10x faster than it went on, I am still obsessing over my scale. I am on vacation and have DELIBERATELY not got access to one and it is really bugging me daily not to weight in 4x a day. I have not weighted for 4 days, that is the longest since I started this journey. while I only log 1x a w eek and chart that, secretly I was in there 2 - 4 times a day.
