Fresh Fruit/Fruit Juice = Nausea??

I'm 17 days out from RNY surgery, and my recovery has been going great. However, just recently I've been feeling lethargic, nauseous and gassy... really pretty miserable. The only thing I've done differently is add fruit juice/ fresh fruit to my diet. The nutritionist told me I needed to get some carbs and suggested drinking some fruit juice, so I did that on Friday. Then I started feeling this way. Then on Sunday (just when I started feeling better) I had a protein smoothie at my gym... finally something that tasted great! But it also had fruit/fruit juice...(pureed banana, strawberry, and orange juice) and I'm back to feeling yucky again. Anyone have or hear of this problem with fresh fruit/fruit juice? My nutritional materials say that the sugar in fruit shouldn't cause dumping syndrome or similar symptoms. I'm going to call the nutritionist today, but would love to hear from those of you going through the same experience... anyone had this??

Hey Katy, My nutritionist told me to use care with fresh fruit. This is due to the fact that they are high in "Natural" sugars, some more than others. She advised to go very slowly and only try one fruit at a time. That way if one particular fruit offends the "yak sak" it can be readily identified and avoided. If it is "any" fruit that makes you sick you could wait a couple weeks and try agan. If it's carb's your trying to add, try oatmeal..It has the "good" carbs and has fiber (which is a good #2 thing). On a personal note it never fails to amaze me at the varying information on diet and nutritional information that is given by medical professionals. Anyway, best of luck and let us know what you find out. Humbly, Jeff

I could try taking the fruit juice/fresh fruit back out of your diet and see how you feel then. I would just be really careful, I know everyone is different but my doctor told me to stay away from all juice unless you take 1/4 cup and mix it with 1/2 cup of water, and it has to be lite juice. As for the fresh fruit I'd just be careful with that too, I'm 1 month out today and I'm still not aloud to have fruit, I would call your doctor and see what his opinion on it is! hopes this helps *hugs*

Hi Katy, my dr allows only 100%fruit and i have done fine on them since the hospitol,we are allowed natural sugar but not others.im not allowed fruit yet but im assuming it would be the same as the juice since it 100% but i would only take 1 friut at a time per day to see how each affects you. good luck and another thing is everybody reacts to things diffrently so you have to do and find whats right for you! I am on a -0- fruit/ fruit juice diet and I sneaked in some lemonade on monday, just 4 sips, about 1.5 oz and got so nauseated that I had my head in the trash and my butt on the toilet for 45 minutes. wow. NEVER do THAT again. no carbs for me, plenty of them in broccoli and asparagus and artichoke.

I was advised to be careful with fruit as it is difficult to digest. As the previous posts have said, maybe stop all fruit and introduce it one at a time. That way, you'll know exactly what is upsetting your body. Hope you get it sorted

My surgeon has encouraged me to eat fruit since week 3 post-op. I drink all kinds of 100% Natural (no sugar added) fruit juices, including lemonade, and have had no problems. I can also eat all kinds of fruit with no problem. I think everyone is different and you should make sure you're having 100% natural fruit juices. I had a smoothie and Jamba Juice with a Protein Boost and I felt fine after that. I made sure with them that everything they use is 100% natural and they assured me it is.
