Protein Bars - has anyone tried yet??

I am still having a really hard time getting in my daily protein, and none of the protein shakes I have tried is tolerable to my system. I am able to eat South Beach Diet's Meal Replacement Bars (one half at a time, totaling one per day). One bar has 19 grams of protein, and along with a protein shake that has 23 grams, this is about all I can get in per day. I'm wondering if anyone else out there has had success substituting protein bars for shakes. I'm trying to get up to 50 grams of protein a day, which is what I think I'm supposed to have based on my height (5'2") and weight (240.5 as of this morning).

Hi Alisa, I use both the shakes and bars, I like the atkins advantage, no suagr alcohol, and then I use the GNC whey protein powder, one in vanilla that I stir in my coffee and banana cream that I scoop in my yogurt, plus what Iactually eat. The shakes have 20 grams per scoop and I think the particular bar I buy has about 10 grams, then I eat my protein first with all my meals. So I am averaging about 50-60 grams a day. It is tough at times, I do notice when I am getting my protein in I am losing faster so that keeps me motivated.

You didn't mention what you're eating? I'm only a month out and I'm able somedays to get 50g just from food. I'm avg anywhere from 50-90g of protien a day. I drink the GNC Whey Protien Chocolate shake that has 20g 2-3x a day. I also drink profect shots that have 25g of protien per single shot.

Megan, thanks for the advice. I actually had seen something abuot the profect shots and am planning to order some this week. I just had my 1 month checkup today (30 pounds lost). I had to get a B-12 shot (NO ENERGY, yuck), but he cleared me for solids and weight resistance training. So I am really going to start trying to eat more food that has protein in it and up my exercise to include weight resistance training. Up to now I've just been exercising 28 minutes on the treadmill and 28 minutes on the exercise bike, 5 times a week. I just haven't been eating as much as I should because it's been such a chore getting down all the necessary protein shakes - they make me feel full and I don't want to eat anything else. So hopefully by eating more (including the protein bars) instead of all the shakes, I'll be able to get in more protein. Between that and upping my exercise, hopefully I'll start losing more weight.

I invested a small fortune in protein powders pre op and now some of them make me . I have been doing the pre made protein drinks Atkins advantage and Carb Advant Edge, I enjoy both of them. I spoke to my nutritionist about the bars and thats what she said about the bars, not to eat a whole one because they are HEAVY on the pouch. I eat a boiled egg for breakfast with a dollop of lite miracle whip, and I try to keep a smuch protein as possible from food.

Hey Alisa! Hope all is well with you. I don't do bars or shakes. I had such a hard time tolerationg those, so I have been getting all of my protein from tuna, chicken and other fish, like talapia. Tuna is especially full of protein! It works for me. By the way, ther is a protein drink called isofect, I think that is how you spell it. I here it's 2.8 oz and has about 25 grams of protein. Hope this helps.

I drink EAS Advant Edge shakes (15 gms protein) and add a scoop of unflavored Unjury protein powder to each shake (an additional 20 gms protein) which gets me up to 70 gms/day not including any solid food I might eat. It's so hard to get the protein shakes down (so sweet!) but I can manage 2/day. I like the South Beach bars, too. Half is plenty. Sufficient protein intake does seem to be related to consistent weight loss, so good luck getting enough into your daily routine.
