Feeling Rough?
I don't want to be negative or anything, but is anyone else feeling rough still? I had lap/RNY May 31st so I'm the baby of you all, but I'm still feeling really rough and weak. I'm on soft food, but have to eat very slowly and then lay down for 30 minutes after. I have bad pain around my stomach at the end of the day, which goes by morning. I read about people doing loads of exercise and stuff and it's as much as I can do to make it through the day at home - I can't even manage things like washing up and stuff. Having a shower tires me out so I have to lay down after.
I find it really difficult to swallow water, although am trying to get in as much as I can and I'm trying to eat well.
Any suggestions, or do I need to be kind to myself and rest for a bit longer?
Thanks
I am afraid that tough love is the only thing that works for me. I had my surgery may 31, and the day of and the day after I was a total baby, then I got home, and I hobbled around a day, and by friday I was out on my bicycle for a VERY SHORT stretch.
saturday I took it easy, and sunday I did a normal day of running errands, shopping, and chasing toddlers. monday I took it easy, and tuesday I was back at work, friday I took the boys on a 2 mile walk, and sunday I took the family on a 9.2 mile bike ride.
you just have to push yourself a tiny bit more each day.
I also had my surgery on 31May. We each are different, maybe your surgery required a little more tugging and pushing around which left you a little more bruised than others. Don't go by what we are doing dance to the beat of your own drum. If your body is telling you to rest...BY GOLLY rest. Eventually you will be back to your normal selt MINUS some weight! *smiles* Do what you can when you can and be sure to let your body tell you what to do. But by all means don't baby yourself. Just give yourself that extra push each day. Have you talked to your surgeons office about this? Right now I am on liquids and will be for the next 8 days. Dear God help me! LOL It's been a long 2 weeks of liquid already. I'm ready for PUREE! YIPPIE! LOL
Hugs!

Hello Ruth,
I had my surgery on May 15 and it took a while for me to get my energy back. I just pushed myself everyday to get up and moving around and then I would rest. There were days I thought I would never get my energy back. My doc only wants me to do walking for the first 4 weeks and not even power walking. I go see him tomorrow so hopefully I will be released to up my exercise. My water intake was rough the first week, but I told myself I was increasing it everyday and now I can get in 80oz of water. I am able to take bigger sipps, thank goodness. Are you getting in all your protein? I was only getting in 2 protein shakes, but once I added the 3rd protein shake I could really tell a big difference in my energy level. It is back to 100%. I still don't eat very much, only 2oz at a time, but I am good with protein shakes for now.
The only advice I can say is push yourself a little everyday and make sure you are getting in your water, protein, and vitamins and do some walking and each day will get better. Just add a little more everyday and before you know it you will be feeling good again. Good luck to you!!
Christy
I think it's pretty normal for our bodies to be still weak, we just had major surgery! I had my surgery on May 12 and this past week is the first week that I've felt pretty normal and back to myself so It takes a few weeks for our bodies to adjust. As long as your get some walking in everyday I wouldn't worry to much about a whole lot of excerise right now, tomorrow is my month and my doctor still doesn't want me doing anything besides walking. As for having difficulty drinking water, I'm with you there! It feels like it gets stuck in your chest area or you get sick to your stomach afterwards. The past couple of days I've actully put a slice of lemon in my water and it doesn't seem to bother me anymore, so give that a try! So i would just relax and give your body time to heal itself, you'll be back to normal in no time! Hugs
Hi Ruth -
I had my sugery on May 17 and only in the last couple of days am I able to go a day without having to lie down or nap. I had the same experience feeling extremely tired after showering! I was getting enough protein and water, and was walking, so it wasn't any nutritional issue or matter of exercise.
I tried to go back to work last week but it was too soon. I'm going to try again tomorrow (3 1/2 weeks out). I walk about 30 minutes a day. At first I did 3 separate walks of 10 minutes each. Now I can do it all at once.
I would listen to your body and maybe check in with your doctor. We are all healing at different paces, and when I read some of the posts of people with tons of energy I feel like I must be doing something wrong, but remind myself that we are all different!
Hope this helps!
Heather
Thanks to everyone for your support.
I've found out the reason I've been getting weaker and not recovering. Yesterday I developed sever vomiting and diorrhea, bringing up over a pint of bile fluid each time, which really scared me. I was in terrible pain in my lower abdomen too. This went on until 2am. Yesterday evening I phoned my surgeon, who is very concerned. I have either a blockage of the bowel or gastroenteritis. He was making arrangements for me to travel back to Belgium to be readmitted to hospital today, but praise God I stopped vomiting and am feeling much better, although weak from it all.
If you believe in the power of prayer, please pray that this is not a blockage (or that God heals it) and that I recover from whatever it is.
Thank you again for all your support.
Hey Ruth, I have been so worried about you, I have not seen any post from you. I will keep you in my prayers and this resolves itself quickly. I had my surgery the day before you, and I still have no energy. Everything else is going ok, but it takes all I have to get up and take my daughter to camp in the mornings. I can feel each day getting a bit better, but I am just so tired and weak. I will keep you in my thoughts and please keep us posted on how you are doing.
