Home from the hospital and feel horrible

I had my surgery on 5/31 and came home from the hospital yesterday morning. I must say the first couple of days were the absolute worst. I have had a fever of 100-101 since the surgery and still do. I have an OVERWHELMING fear of complications happening, I didn't sleep a wink last night, and this morning i just feel so weird. I have been crying uncontrollably for a couple of hours. Has this happened to any of you? I didn't think it would be this hard mentally. I am only 5 days post op and feel so helpless. The Dr. said before i left the hospital to go back immediately if i feel a burning sensation in my legs or arms. The hypochondriac that I am now thinks that I feel that. Did your Dr's warn you of this. Do you know if its like an intense pain they or talking about or if its faint? Help me please, I need some words of encouragement.

Hey Renee, first you need to calm down, there is nothing bad going to happen to you. If the Dr really felt you were at risk for blood clots (the burning or numbness/tingling) in your legs and arms you would not be at home. They tell everyone that mainly so that if some wild chance it did happen you can't sue them and say they never told me. I have seen it in patients before, and yes it is a very intense feeling, they said their arms felt like they were on fire, literally. Plus, your toes or fingers would swell up like ballons and be blue and purple. As long as you get up and walk some, and if you are sitting there, move your feet around and around in circles. You just have to keep the circulation going to prevent them. As for the fever, yeap, I got tylenol suppositories in the hospital (how much fun) my fever kept spiking up. That level of a fever is actually pretty normal, you just had surgery and your body is trying to heal itself, and the fever is part of that. Try to find something to help keep your mind off of the surgery for just a few minutes every once in a while, that will really help. If they depression does not go away in a day or to talk to your doc, he can give you something like zoloft or paxil that will help you deal with those feelings. But remember it is all normal. You are not going thru anything different then the rest of us. Keep your head up, in a few weeks you will feel like a new woman. And write us back on here, this is the best outlet in the world. --Angela

I say just go see your doctor. that way if something is wrong he can get the fix going. and if everything's fine, he can send you home with a peaceful feeling so you can start the healing. take care. Breathe.

Renee- I had surgery the day before you and I felt the same way the 1st day I was home. I came home on Saturday and was so freaked out that there was something wrong and that I would have to go back to the hospital. I am now doing fine, still a little scared of any complications but know that the long run will be worth it. Since you have a fever you have to call the Dr. and let them know. I cried most of the day yesterday but had a friend near by for support. Let us know how you are doing now.

Renee...Hi honey...I had my surgery the same day as you. I do admit that the first day was really tough but as the days pass it does get easier. I did have a break down the other morning though. I felt helpless and like a horrible mother because my two children were depending on their father and themselves for more than usual and my laundry was piling up along with dishes. I felt overwhelmed. Cry if you have to. I would not let this happen much though. And if you are nervous call the docs office. Let them rest your mind at ease. Get rest too! I find that I usually nap about 2.5 hrs a day and feel good then go back to bed around 8 or 9 pm. Your doc is there to help you page him if you want. Feel better honey and IM me or email me at [email protected] can be bari buddies since we had surgery on the same day! Hugs! Shele

I was warm but did not have a fever, I really do think that it is mind over matter. when I start to hurt from doing to much (also a may 31 baby) I lay down, on the couch, and close my eyes. gently brushing my fingers around the incisions, helps me to get in touch with my self. I really take an internal picture of where the pain is from. is it from inside or is it the stitches. if it is really bad, I take a 20 cc of tylenol 3 + codiene and it subsides. I am still running in my night gown each day, but I do take a good hot shower every other day to refresh my spirit as much as to cleanse my body. I am up and about A LOT and I strongly encourage it. I am also on a 100% broth and water diet, that really helps to keep things 'easy'. the more I worry about complications, the more I become a self fulfilling prophesy. you are not helpless, you can heal yourself more effectively than a doctor at this point.

Thank you all for your words of encouragement and for reassuring me that I am not alone. Yesterday morning was just horrible, I was good all throughout the day but when night hit i just went right back downhill. I felt so weird. Dizzy, lightheaded, clammy, just not right and my anxiety totally took over me. I called my Dr. and he told me to go back to the hospital and be evaluated and I did. They admitted me, hydrated me, ran all kinds of tests, had me on a heart monitor all night. I turned out to be ok, the Dr. figured I just had a major panic attack. I am glad I went back to the hospital, gave me a huge ease of the mind and today I felt great. Just wanted to give you all an update. Thanks again!

If you keep on having alot of anxiety ask your doc for a short term dose of anti-anxiety med like kolonpin, xanx, or someting. You don't need to suffer. I have a script prn for anxiety and I used when needed for the firt couple weeks. In the hospital they gave me Ativan prn, I used it 3 or 4 times I was in the hospital for 5 days. You can ask your primary or surgery doc I think. I have anxiety already and the first couple weeks my anxiety was threw the roof. It is so normal, I was scared of dying ect. You will feel more confident as time goes by. Also try to walk as much as possible you will be helping yourself physically and mentally. Just know time heals all wounds inside and out. Hope you feel better quickly just like I did. Everyday gets better.
