Who's Been Cheating?
Ok You Guys! I'm (9) days post op and we're still on the liquid diet....isn't this a bit silly now? Has anyone started the puree part of their diet prior to the doctor telling them it's ok? Please don't get me wrong i'm not squooshing up a steak or thinking of it but cottage cheese, mashed potatoes/sweet potatoes anything so that i don't have to have those freakin' shakes for every single meal? PLEASE REPLY IF YOU'VE DONE THE PUREE BEFORE DOCTORS ORDERS. hugs, ANDI
Hi Andi,
I was RELEASED from the hospital on Pureed Diet. My surgeon (Circle of Excellence) thinks that it's complete BS that any patiant is ever released on a liquid diet. The only reason he see's to do it is for more weight loss the first couple of weeks. That being said, I'm two weeks out and was released to a normal soft food diet yesterday. I'm eating everything with the exception of raw veggies and raw uncooked food.

(I would have died on a liquid diet) oh and btw.. I'm down 21lbs to 251
Hi....yup me too...I was released from the hospital on a pureed diet. Alot of Dr's have different protocols....and although it is very important to follow your Dr's plan...it's not always easy. I couldn't stand the pureed stage....I would literally gag just thinking about pureed meat......ugh!!! lol. I didn't know what to do because my Dr wants his pt's on protein only!!!!! I caved and had some unsweetened applesauce, sf pudding, refried beans, soups (with soft veggies) etc etc. Sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do....lol I lost 16 lbs in a week....so i'm doing ok....next appt is tues....so we'll see....i'm worried!!!

i was on Clear liquids for only a few days, while in the hospital i was on Full liquids, i was moved to Pureeds at my 1 week appointment, and i'm suppose to be on them until July 5th..... Well........
In my little "book" that they gave me, it says..... that if it can be chewed to "applesauce" consistancy, then it's OK..... so i pretty much eat everything i make my family, i choose more protien then starchs, if it's beef or pork, i puree it, and mix it with mashed potatoes, but hamburger i take small bites and chew the heck outta it.
i have been having NO problems eating!! i haven't eaten raw veggies yet, or anything hard.... (chips, crackers, hard veggies) i stick with softer foods and food i can chew really well.
I'm still learning that i must eat SLOWLY!!! lol....
Good luck!

Andrea,
I have top go with the others. My surgery was on 5/23 and they had me on only clear liquids that day. Full liquids on Weds and Thurs. I went home Thurs also they said to start the puree diet on Friday. I have not had any problems with that. I know it is only water weight, but I am down 6 pounds from when I went in
Every doctor is different, I would talk to your surgeon and see what he says. That is just my opinion. I am sure alot of people would just decide for themselves too. It is up to you. Good luck!

Me :P But not really. I was on a clear liquid for the first week, but broke down and did full liquid two days early. Then I was supposed to be on full liquids for two more weeks, but got the ok from the doc to do the applesauce consistency thing after one week. Now I can eat anything, so long as I take tiny, tiny bites and chew chew chew chew. I rub my tongue up against the top of my mouth and if I can feel any "chunks" I keep chewing.
I was never on a clear liquid diet, they gave me SF jello, chicken and beef broth and a few other full liquid foods the day after surgery. My doctor wanted me on full liquids for 2 weeks but I did have some soft foods a couple of times before the two weeks was up (e.g. applesauce, refried beans, peanut butter, etc). He told me I could start on soft foods 16 days out so I guess he skipped the pureed phase too. I haven't had anything really hard but have been eating chicken pot pies, Campbell's vegetable beef and chicken noodle soup. Today I went to Boston Market and had mashed potatoes and white meat chicken. I could only eat 5 or 6 bites before I felt full though. I make sure I chew everything to a applesauce or better consistency so I think I'm following my doctor's rules. I did have a slice of cheese pizza and a couple of cookies without any problems (no nausea or dumping) but I know I need to stay away from that and focus on proteins. I bought some cashews and almonds and ate about 8 almonds for my final meal this evening but chewed them completely too. Today (Monday) is my 3 week post-op date so I'll be on soft foods for another 3 weeks. It's touhg but sure beats the liquid only phase!!
Good luck!!!
Rick

My surgeon mnoved me to pureed food before I even got out. He said he wants us on the puree ASAP, so, for me, I never really went through the broth-only stage and am already cleared now for soft lunch meat and eggs ... Stage III ...and my surgery was
5-18-06.
