Tracking food question/poll
For those of us who may track our food and/or exercise intake I have a question.
Do you:
1. Track what you eat after the fact?
2. Plan what you eat and then follow that?
3. Some combination of both.
The old Weigh****chers chestnut:
When you fail to plan you plan to fail, always implied (or at least the teachers I heard) that they planned their days ahead of time.
I've never done that, other than to plan general ideas for meals so I can grocery shop. But, I'm experimenting with entering all my eating in the morning. I don't know what difference it might make -- I did it yesterday for the first time (I had a *terrible* eating day yesterday, BTW).

I don't pre-track, but I do plan. I pack my breakfast, lunch and plenty of good snacks (like green peppers, carrots, a granola bar, etc.) I used to keep some stuff on hand at work but found that with a whole box of granola bars or the like, sitting in my desk drawer, I was more likely to snack more often and eat too many of them. By packing that morning, I mitigate any potential cravings to snack without leaving a ticking bomb in my desk.
That's during the week.
Weekends, I track as I eat with no planning. The only difference is, on the weekdays, when I get home, I log everything I've eaten up until that time and all that's left is dinner. On the weekends, I eat breakfast, I log it. I have a snack, I log it. It helps me to not graze as much because I've trained myself to log it as I eat it and if I eat too much, it becomes a total pain.
Eileen,
I don't pre-track but I do pre-plan. I do so much better if I don't fly by the seat of my pants, ya know?
Rich is a true gem in every sense of the word and he tries to keep the house in food and to keep meals planned out. In the mornings, he'll pack my breakfast and lunch which I take to work. (He also sets up my vitamins, mixes my morning protein shake, drops anything I forget off at my office on his way to work... I am living a charmed life.)
Anyway, we plan together in a sense. I already know that he boiled some eggs so I'll be taking a couple of hard boiled eggs to work for tomorrow. He made taco meat so there is some of that to be eaten either for lunch or dinner tomorrow.
My "day hours" are well planned and I usually know what I'm going to have for dinner based on what is already prepared. I don't really like to cook for just me. I have dinner on my own since Rich works til 9 pm but usually he'll have stuff in the fridge all set. This week we had Giada (De Laurentis') meatballs. Rich made they Sunday so they lasted a few days. We had deli ham and cheese. We made heroin wings on Saturday so there were leftovers of those for several days too.
In the past... doing Weigh****chers... there is no question having my whole day planned out always, always worked out best. What would throw me off is an impromptu dinner out. I used to like to plan for dinners out by saving my carb servings for the outing. Nowadays, I eat protein focused meals whether home or out so plan changes don't really phase me like they did in the old days.
