Adhesions?
My family dr told me i have adhesions from this surgery. Can anyone tell me about this and what they are or how you get them? I havent talked to the surgeons office yet but i will be giving them a call. I have had a stomach pain for a couple weeks now and so i finally went to the Dr. After a full exam and pregnancy test they decided it was adhesions from my surgey. I am also 75 lbs away from goal and i havent gone down more than 10-15 lbs in the past 2-3 months. I know this is not normal. How do i get back on track. I would like to lose at least another 50 lbs as quickly as possible. My dad motivated me quite a bit since he saw that i was slacking by sending me an old picture of myself that was absolutely horrible. I know i am still a long ways from goal but after looking at that pic, I have come a long way. I am upset becasue i still have a long ways to go but still very proud of myself for how far i have come. Any help or encouraging words would be great. Thank you
My understanding is that adhesions can occur after abdominal surgery and are a not-so-rare side effect of any abdominal surgery. I believe that adhesions are like scar tissue that forms and attaches to organs sort of binding them together and that can cause pain and can cause things to get twisted. I believe the only remedy for it is to do surgery to cut the adhesions out. But since that is more surgery, it is possible to get more adhesions from the repair surgery itself.
How did they diagnose yours, do you know? Did you have an EGD to rule out ulcers?
The weight you have lost is the past 2-3 months is not that unusual. You'll find that many of us have been having very slow weight losses over the past couple of months. The amount that folks are losing seems somewhat proportional to how much more they have to lose... I'm within 10 pounds of goal and losing 1-2 lbs a month.
I wouldn't be surprised if I have adhesions. Back from September on, I started having pain in my right side under my rib cage. My gallbladder was tested and the tests weren't conclusive on it. But based on the pain I was experiencing (dull pain that seemed to come after eating), we went ahead and removed my gallbladder. The pain did not go away unfortunately - my gallbladder was inflammed and did have stones so good riddens to it! Anyway, my surgeon did other tests after the gallbladder removal to try to identify the pain...MRCP (to check for gallstones in the ducts) and a CT scan of my whole abdomen. Nothing unusual. Over time, my pain subsided. It was gradual. Lately it is coming back. I did mention it to my surgeon when I last saw him but it wasn't regular at that time. I told him that it seems to happen after I eat and when I have my body positioned very upright and straight...like in my car seat. I told him that I thought the pain subsided in the fall because I continued to lose weight and there was "more room" for stuff in there. He seemed intrigued but not yet totally convinced. Anyway, the pain has been with me every day the past several days so I guess I have to bite the bullet and see the surgeon again. I'm not happy. I really think I have adhesions on my pouch. When I eat, weight is it the pouch and it is that weight which causes pulling on the adhesions which yields pain - dull but it is still pain. It is disconcerting to say the least.
Good luck to you! Keep us posted on your progress and what the surgeon tells you.
Best wishes,
Kathy
Melodee,
I'm 80 lbs from goal. It scares me to think I may not make it. But, it really is up to us, right? Are you exercising? If not, start with a daily walk. It will get that scale moving again for you. I exercise all the time, but, I still have the eating compulsion, so I have to watch that.
Take Care and keep coming back to the boards for support!
