Maysters Fit Club!

Last week, I started a fit club at work to help motivate me to keep up with my physical activity AND to make me think about spicing up my routine every once in a while. Tomorrow is the end of Week One, but I thought why shouldn't I share this with my OH group? At work, we are competing for $$, but on the May Board, we can just compete for "honor." Is anyone game? GOAL: To earn the most "points" in the next 7 weeks (starting Sunday, February 12th until Saturday, April 1st). Here are the rules: 1. A workout is defined as any form of regularly accepted exercise (i.e., running, walking, biking, elliptical, lifting weights, swimming, dancing, etc) that lasts 30 minutes or more. a. Working out for longer than 30 minutes at one time will count as additional workouts. (For example, working out for 2 hours will be equal to 4 "workouts" and will earn 4 points). b. A challenger may combine shorter workouts to add up to a complete workout (for example, a 15 minute walk and a 15 minute bike ride in the same day will be a workout, and will earn 1 point). c. Any activity that is part of your normal daily activity will NOT be considered a workout unless you are adding a "challenge" element to the existing activity. For example, those of us who walk to work cannot count that as a workout unless we are carrying weights (actual weights, not a backpack/bag) as we walk. Those of us who walk up a ridiculous hill to work cannot count the walk unless weights are used or you are running up the stairs/hill, rather than walking. If you walk a dog normally, jogging/running the dog will count...but remember, it must be a 1/2 hour of continuous exercise. 2. Each challenger is on their honor to report their workouts honestly--do not round up your work out times or count non-vigorous activity as a workout. 3. Each Challenger will report their previous weeks workouts and challenge points in the post entitled "Maysters Fit Club, Week One"(or week two, etc) that will be begun by me on the Sunday after that week has been completed. 4. At the beginning of each week, Jem will issue a special Fit Club challenge for the week. Challengers who successfully complete the challenge will be awarded bonus "workouts" to add to their total tally. 5. Jem will compile the challengers points each week and post them in the May message board. 6. You can complete any or all of the challenges given out during the week, you don't have to pick and choose. Week ONE Challenges! 1 point: Try any new physical activity that you have NEVER done before--this could be a new workout video, trying a new sport, trying a new move in an old sport (new yoga/pilates move). If you are having a hard time thinking of something to try, email me and I'll give you a few suggestions. Make sure you give a description of what you did in your weekly email. 1 point: Keep a daily food journal for the week. Include EVERYTHING you ate or drank, no matter how "naughty!" 2 points: 240 minutes of exercise this week (this includes workouts and exercise that wouldn't count as a workout (such as 5 minutes on a treadmill or 15 minutes running)) 3 points: Climb the Eiffel Tower! According to wikipedia, there are currently 1665 steps to the top of the Eiffel Tower. In order to complete this challenge, you must climb 1,665 steps over the course of this week. You do not have to climb the entire number of steps at once (but if you do climb all 1665 steps in one day, there is a 1 point bonus), but you do have to climb ACTUAL steps--in other words, you can't use a stair-stepping machine or elliptical and count those as steps. You can count every step you climb during the day (but they must be steps, not curbs!). Walking DOWN steps does not count. For those of us in the city--this challenge is designed to rip us away from the elevator and making sure we walk up the escalator (which counts, just count the steps you actually walked up, not the number of steps in the escalator). For those of you who don't regularly have to use an elevator, I'm sure you can find some good steps at a high school football stadium to climb up! Reply to this post if you are up for the challenge! Maysters Fit Club Week One starts Sunday, February 12th!!

I'm in! How do I factor in points for mopping the floor, dusting the ceiling fans and vaccuuming, though? Grumble. I'm meeting with some ladies tomorrow to mark the start of a local walking/jogging group I started, so I'll be able to figure things out more accurately in the future. Gina

Jem, I think this is a great idea. I am not going to actively participate since I have a trainer and the routine he gives me is changin and challenging. Plus, I already post daily to the "Gym Is Open" post, which has really been helpful. I average 325 to 400 minutes a week of exercise. I usually make the 400. But, if your idea can get more of us on this list to get motivated to start moving, I think it is great! Good luck! Lori
