August Girl-needs advice

I had surgery in August. Next Tuesday will be my five month anniversary. I thought I would ask you all for advice since you all have a few more months of wisdom and experience than I do on WLS. I hit my first stall at the end of November and did not lose a pound or an inch until the end of December. At the beginning of the stall I was at 216 (60 pound loss) and lost down to 206 (70 pound loss) almost overnight at the end of the stall. This is my current problem. I have been jogging/walking every night on the treadmill for 35 minutes/2.15 miles - sometimes with hand weights - since January 8th. I HAVE GAINED SIX POUNDS! I am now back up to 212 (64 pound loss). I gained two pounds during the night last night. My measurements have also gone up. I eat about 1100 Calories, 90 Protein, 88 Carbs, 53 Fat, and hardly any sugars. Have any of you experienced anything like this? Do you have any advice? I am so frustrated!! 276/212/130 (206 until I began exercising a lot)

Is your protein from food or shakes? How much from each? Since you are exercising so much, you might actually need *more* calories. Less is NOT always a better thing. I would also make sure to give your body a rest. I wouldn't run EVERY night. I'd take a day or two off a week from the running. Kathy

Remember to that musle weighs more than fat and with that much walking/running a night you could be building musles. Penny 320/207/150???????

My protein comes from food. I really don't drink a lot of protein drinks. I will have one every now and then. As far as muscle, I thought that at first as well, but I began gaining the day after I started exercising. I didn't think muscles could develop over night. Maybe, they can.

Are your muscles sore from beginning exercising? If so, I would bet they are holding onto water/fluids hence the gain. Kathy

Kathy, I am a little sore. Do muscles retain water when they are breaking down and rebuilding? You seem very knowledgeable about fitness. I read your post to someone else. Are you a trainer? Regardless, your info is very helpful. Thanks.

I'm not a trainer nor do I play one on TV. I'm just an info junkie. Sore muscles do retain water. That much I do know. Just like every injury we have whether self-inflicted, accident or even surgery. Water/fluids build up. It is how our body responds to traumas of all kinds. Thanks! Kathy

Logically it makes no sense that you would be increasing your fat stores and gaining fat pounds based on the diet and exercise that you have described. If everything you describe is correct than I would just wait it out. Your weight will start dropping again soon. I would also keep a very accurate food diary for a while, maybe there are more carbs in your day than you realize. Great job on the exercise!!! Don't give it up for fear of not losing. Thanks, Jen. I keep up with my intake on Fitday.com. I even list the bites of foods that I take on the website. I hope you are right. Surely, my body has to respond and begin losing again.

Sherry, You are so doing the right thing! I wish our doctors could have given us some kind of patience implant along with our gastric bypass surgery! I struggle as well, knowing I'm exercising 5 days a week religiously for 1 hr 15 min and I try to get in a 6th day most weeks. Did I lose any weight this week? NO! Did it make me feel discouraged? YES Will I stop exercising so much? NO But, do I have to keep asking myself questions and answering them in this inane way? Apparently! Keep it up. Try to have patience. It is what I remind myself every time I have a week like this! Lori 384/260.5/168
