Capsules?

At what point or are we ever allowed to take capsules again? Can our stomachs ever digest these things again? My doctor prescribed some medication for my herniated disk and it comes in capsule form. I'm already sick of having to unscrew the capsule and choke that nastiest powder down. Any comments? Heather 267/168/155

I've been taking capsules for a while, now. In fact, I don't recall my doc saying anything about capsules, only to watch out for tablets bigger than an aspirin... I wonder if I'm SUPPOSED to be taking capsules...

I didn't hear anything about capsules either. Actually the prescription vitamins I take twice a day are in capsule form and this is from my surgeon. I don't have any problems with them. Cindee 310/220/???

My doc has pretty much said nothing bigger than a birth control pill (and I have tried and it gets stuck), no sustained release pills ever, same with anti-inflammatories, and capsules. We don't have stomach acid which is needed for the coating on sustained release tablets and to remove the coating on the capsules. The anti-inflammatories (Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, etc.) can give us ulcers (ya know how they say it can cause stomach upset??) because it just sits on our stomach lining without any coating to protect it. One of the girls in my support group, though, said that her doc said anti-inflammatories were okay if you take them with milk or something else that may coat the stomach (or with milk of magnesia or something).

One thing that you might want to do is take your capsules with hot/warm tea. My husband was taking calcium citrate capsules and the first time they got stuff even though he was over a year post-op - up it came. So now he takes them with hot/warm liquid and it breaks it up right in the pouch. Kathy

I've been taking timed release capsules since about 3 months out from surgery (on my surgeon's approval). Works great for me! Caren
