Better! Much better! Keep in mind that since we had RNYs that we don't have much stomach acid. Our bodies need stomach acid to break protein down into amino acids so that it can be absorbed. So, the protein we get from food sources - we don't absorb all of it since it isn't broken down well enough. I've heard a figure of 30% but I doubt that anyone can exactly pinpoint how much each of us truly absorbs since each of us was operated on by different surgeons and where things were rehooked up will be different. Obviously someone who is distal will absorb less than a proximal. Anyway, given that info...that means that you absorb approximately (definite guessimate here) 30% of the food protein you take in. So the 22 grams of cheese sticks becomes...6, and so on. Protein shakes are already pre-digested and broken down into amino acids. So, they are prime and ready to be absorbed. Even by us post-ops! This is why I think it is so very important to get your protein shakes in. Luckily my surgeon believes in them for life for us post-ops. Many doctors don't believe in them for more than the first couple of weeks. My philosophy is that I really don't even count food protein. I try to get my day's worth of protein from shakes. That's why if you see my post what I eat, I normally don't have much as far as snacks go because I'm too busy getting my protein shakes and 3 meals in. Just some food for thought! Kathy
