Anyone had surgery since RNY?
I'm about to have shoulder surgery soon (get my date tomorrow hopefully). Is there anything different about recovery since we are bypass patients now? Any tips? Should the doctor's prescribe liquid pain meds vs. pills? I'm on lortab right now and it seems to be doing pretty good, just causing some initial discomfort after taking it. I know after surgery they give you sprite, popsicles, et****il the meds wear off, so I'll have to make sure they don't do that or they'll have a real mess on their hands!
Thanks in advance!

Wow, Ashleigh, you look terrific!
I had surgery several weeks ago and just made sure my anesth. knew I was a WLS patient. My OB/GYN already knew. I also told the surgical nurse I couldn't have sprite, etc., in case I was too out of it after surgery to know better.
I asked for liquid lortab for pain medicine because I knew it worked well for me and didn't cause any problems. I don't know how different recovery was due to WLS, to be honest, since that was only my 2nd surgery (including WLS).
I had a "small surgery" just a couple of weeks ago. I was amazed that the hospital put in BIG letters across the top of my chart that I was a gastric bypass patient. Everyone who came into my room asked me about it!! My nurse came in to give me a pill (to calm the stomach I guess) but as soon as she came in she said, "you'd probably rather not swallow a pill huh?" and she offered to run it through my IV. I was very pleased with that!!
As far as meds when you go home, it depends what you can tolerate. I can't swallow any pills. If it's not chewable or liquid I can't take it. So I'd have to ask for liquids, but if you can take pills and want them, then go ahead.

Ashleigh,
I had a hysterectomy two weeks ago. I made sure the anestesiologist and my surgeon were aware, but really not a lot of difference. No NSAIDS and no blind NG tube is really the only thing to be aware of for me. My GYN was very aware and was sure to prescribe the correct things. I'm confident my surgery went as well as it did because I'd lost over 90 pounds too.
Good luck with your shoulder!

Hi Ashleigh,
First of you look aswesome.. 2nd all the best with your surgery!
I just had a hernia repair 3 weeks ago and everything was fine. I told the anestesiologist that I had a Gastric Bypass... I can swallow pills and my surgeon gave me darvest which worked great. When I was in recovery I asked for hot tea.. which they gave me and all was well.
All the best of luck to you!
