Protien Intake

I'm posting this because I know I can't be the only one out there not getting all of their protien in. I've really been struggling with my eating and it all came to a head this afternoon. I was standing in the kitchen chopping vegetables and talking to my husband when my ears started ringing and I got a light feeling in my head. I remember telling my husband, "I think I'm going to pass out." Next thing I know, I'm opening my eyes and I'm laying flat on my back on the kitchen floor. I then hear my husband on the phone in the other room asking for an ambulance. I sit myself up and I'm shaking and my skin is clammy. I yell to him that I don't need an ambulance (we can't afford it!). He checks me and sees I'm sitting up and he cancels the ambulance. We then test my blood sugar ... 127 ... normal. I knew it was because I needed to eat. Needless to say I've been resting and eating and I'm feeling much better. I plan to call my surgeon Monday morning. Don't learn the hard way like I did. My poor husband was scared to death and I was scared too! I'm so glad he was right there because he caught me as I fell, keeping me from hitting my head on the stove. We HAVE to eat, no matter if we are hungry or not or if food tastes good or not. I just thought I should share. Diane

Diane - what a scary wake up call for you. You are right we do have to eat not matter what. That's why me and cottage cheese are best friends. I go through two large containers of it every week. I'm glad that you're feeling better though!! laurie

Diane, I struggle with protein too. I've recently purchased some of the profect that's often advertised on this site. It's a little pricey, but helps me ensure I get what I need each day. You just drink 2.7 ounces and you've had 25 grams of protein. You can find it cheaper at ubid.com. Maybe that will help you. I'm so glad you didn't get hurt when you passed out, but please be sure to take care of yourself! ~Wanda

Wanda, You said exactly what I was going to suggest, we got to try the Profect at a recent "taste fest" we had at our support group meeting. The taste is not all that great but its not to hard to get down that 2.7 ounces, I just plug my nose and take a few swigs. Thanks for the suggestion on where to get it cheaper, I have been meaning to get some I will check ubid.com out! Cary

Diane, you're right, it can be a struggle sometimes. I've been trying to force myself to do a protein shake every morning because I've been getting lazy about it. Without, I can get about 40 grams of protein a day. At the end of the day, I think, 40 g, that close (I'm supposed to be getting 55), I'll make up for it tomorrow. Tomorrow comes and I do the same thing. By the end of the week, I'm barely averaging 45 grams a day. So far, the only affect is my weight loss has stalled but I know there are dangerous side effects, as well. Sorry you had to learn the hard way, but I'm glad you're feeling better now. Becky

Diane, Be sure to follow-up with your doctor and be sure he runs labs to make sure that all your levels are okay. And do so soon, okay? Your blood sugar wasn't low and certainly not at a level to cause you to be hypoglycemic due to not eating. Protein will definitely keep your body stronger and yes - we really do need to eat regularly. I eat by the clock and not by hunger. If I ate by hunger - I don't think I'd eat that much in a day and certainly not often either. Take good care of yourself! Hugs, Kathy

Diane, The same thing happen to me a few weeks after surgery,I was walking in the malls with my husband and i saw this lady walking towards me and she just kept on looking at me strange, and then when i got closer to her i wanted to move from her way but couldnt and started to lean toward her like if i was going to fall on her and she got scared her eyes bulged out like saying "here comes this 300lb woman going to smash me" (not funny) so i stopped and told my husband that i was going to pass out ( which i never did) and so I rested a little and then continued to shop! So point her Diane, It happen to me too(twice at that). I never spoke to the Dr about it so I dont know why it happen. Take care Rosie

Diane, I too am having a problem with getting enough protein. I'm back to having a protein shake or the profect drink every morning. I'm having intolerances for meat, so my protein is cheese, milk, yogurt, etc. My weight loss has stalled also. I haven't lost anything in about 3 weeks - very frustrating! I just had blood work done last week and see my PCP on Thursday. My blood sugar is okay now (I'm diabetic), but I've had the feeling I would pass out on several occasions and it's kind of scary. Make sure you let your doctor know. Jean
