sugar??
Hey
Anyone else not dumping from sugar? sugar does not make me dump! Is something wrong with me? I am loosing weight and inches because I am choosing to stay away from sugar. But everynow and then I eat a half a slice of cake (no icing) or regular iced tea. I take my vitamins twice a day and one suppliment (protein) I have lost 68 lbs and 19 inches But the idea that I can eat sugar scares me.

That would be me! I do not dump on sugar at all. My surgeon told me to just take it easy, treat myself when I need to but don't over do it. I was not a sweet tooth before surgery and I hope to stay that way. I do all my vitamins/protein, water, etc. If I do want to treat myself I try to get all my protein and a little extra in before. Or if I treat myself early than I'll remmeber to throw in an extra protein drink/snack before the day is over. The sugar is not affecting my weight loss, at least I don't think it is. My weight loss has in general slowed but I still am losing a pound or two per week (I'm only 24 pounds from goal so it's my guess it will get harder the closer I am to goal).
Just be sure to check in with your diet person and surgeon. Every one has different rules. Mine allow sugar but some want you to stay away.
Good luck.

I've heard a quote that 40% of folks have dumping syndrome post-op. That leaves 60% that don't. No question that I wanted the RNY because I wanted to be afraid to have sugar. Not sure if I dump on sugar at this point since I haven't tried it. I do dump on other strange things including sugar alcohol, some high protein low carb cereal and salmon w/ sauce from Outback Steakhouse (no sugar - I emailed and asked).
I'm not advocating eating sugar here. Nope. Not at all. But I do want to say that drinking a sugared liquid is totally empty calories which has zero nutrition. I'd suggest keeping away from the "regular iced tea".
Over time as our bodies adjust to the weight loss and as our intestines start to compensate for being rerouted...more of the calories we take in will get absorbed. Ultimately the game of continuing to lose weight or maintaining your weight loss will come down to calories-in versus calories-burned. So eventually calories from sugar are going to have an effect.
I think Ana said that her doctor has said that it is okay to have sugar once in a while. I think if we could all learn to eat the way many thin people do who watch what they eat most of the time and then when special occassions come up - have little bit of this and a little bit of that.
It would be nice to get into that mindset.

I haven't experienced any dumping from sugar either. I do stay away from it though because I'm diabetic and am off ALL my medications and insulin now - yeah!
Every once in a while I get a craving for sugar, not in sodas or snacks, I'm talking about real sugar and will sprinkle a teaspoonful on Rice Krispies for breakfast. More than that gives me too much of a rush.
I try hard to stay away from any sweets.
