Protein Demon

Hey all. After being lectured by Dr. Ganz at convention, and my PCP, AND my surgeon's assistant... I thought maybe... just maybe I should start trying to up my protein from my 1 egg a day to wherever the heck I'm supposed to be. I went on the bariatric eating site and ordered one of their trial-packs of 15 different protein rich products. PLEASE send happy thoughts my way that I find one that isn't too "yucky" for me... cause that's the reason I haven't had any up til now. I'm not TRYING to be stubborn, or risk my health... I was the pickiest fat person I ever met... Some things just aren't meant to be injested... and a "shake" that smells like old bones is one of them!! Also... I need some advice on vitamins. I'm taking one of the generic flinstones once per day... is that good enough? Shannon

try try try to get that protein in... hold your nose and drink... it will make a difference.. I got some samples as well... some I like and some I dont. Fuzzy navel was good, nectar tea was good, vanilla bery berry is delish, white chocolate rasp is good... depends on what your sample pack contains. cheese, cottage cheese, beans, chick salad. you should have gotten some estimates from your doc or nutritionist about whaty your protein/fluids intake should be as well as your vitamin requirements... If you didnt, id suggest a phone call. I was told due to malabsortion, one multivit 2x per day, 1 calcium 2x per day (not together cause they cancel each other), am also taking biotin, fish/flax oil, and prilosec (to help prevent ulcers). Good luck Karen

Have you tried Unjury unflavored protein? It is unflavored and unsweetened and can be mixed with anything from Crystal Light to soup to taters, etc. No strong flavor or smell. Kathy

Hey Kathy thats exactly what I was going to suggest! I really enjoyed the unjury. You can order it from Unjury.com and even buy just the sample packets until you find a flavor that you love. I personally love the vanilla!

Shannon, try mixing them, with juice, Crystal Light, Koolaid, whatever (I'm thinking the fruity-flavored, not the chocolate/vanilla variety ) I mix Nectar with CL. Another thought is a product called Protica. They're little 2oz vials worth something like 25g of protein. I read a lot of posts on the main board about it. Some people like the taste, some don't, but we're talking about a couple of swallows and their gone. I take 2 chewable flintstones plus my B12 Sub. I'm not taking calcium right now (which is really bad). I'm looking into switching to prenatals soon, though. Good luck!

Something else to try is mixing Splenda into your protein drinks. I use Major Egg protein mix (Vanilla and Chocolate varieties) and I mix in 2 tbsp. of Splenda (the 1 to 1 sugar stuff available in a bag) and it makes all the difference. Without it, that protein stuff is WICKED! By the way, I can feel for you. I think that I, not you, was the most picky eater on the planet!

Ahhhh, don't make me come after you about vitamins... I missed that the first time I read your post. Here is what I take daily: 1. Two multivitamins chewables 2. Two Vitron C (iron pills - I am premenopausal so I take iron) 3. Two 500 mg Vitamin C chewable to go with the iron - helps me absorb the iron 4. One 1000 mcg B12 sublingual (we either have to take sublingual or a shot) 5. Two TBSP liquid Super B Complex (was taking B1 supplement post-op and then after 45 days I was switched to a B100 complex) 6. Six Calcium Citrate Chewable Wafers - I take 2 - 3 times a day at 500 mg a shot - we only absorb 500 at a time. These are not things I've added, these are what is required by my surgeon and the bariatric dieticians at our hospital. Believe me, you do not want to get a B12 or B1 deficiency. You can end up with neuropathy (nerve damage). You do not want a calcium deficiency - you can end up with osteoporosis. Kathy

Kathy, My nutritionist says that you have to take iron even if you are post-menopausal since we can't absorb it very well. So, you got a lifetime in front of you of iron, plus all the others you mentioned. I'm post menopausal, since I had to have a hysterectomy a year ago. I was surprised with this news. But, I'm in compliance. Lori

Got ya! Green poop, forever! Yeah! Rich actually has to take iron too. His counts were low so he had to have it added and he is not "pausal" of any type. Kathy
