Most people (me included) go through it. It's pretty common with rapid weight loss. There's a name for it - Kathy knows what it is, I don't remember. Protien may help, but it won't stop it altogether. It's just your body's reaction to all the new changes - don't worry, it won't last long and it will grow back.

Hey Joyce... You might want to update your profile, because it lists your surgery date as 9/7/05. As far as hair loss, I've heard that it will eventually straighten itself out. I am not only experiencing hair loss, but breakage as well. It is so bad that I may have to get a weave soon...Good luck, and let me know what works for you.

I had surgery on May 11th and started losing my hair about a month ago. About 2 weeks ago I went and bought some Nioxin shampoo and it is working! When I lift my bangs I can see thousands of new baby hairs growing in.

Most of the beauty supply stores and hair salons out here carry it. If you can't find it, ask the person who cuts your hair. Or you can try the website: www.nioxin.com.

This is telogen effluvium. It happens after major times of stress to the body (i.e. surgery, weight loss, severe fever, emotional stress). It is temporary, however, it can take months to ressolve. You will not go bald. Supplements and protein can help very little. Essentially, the hair has 3 growth phases, anagen (growth), catagen (rest), and telogen (shedding). Once you are in any of these phases you cannot do anything about it because it is a uncontrollable bodily process. Just hang in there and all will be well eventually. I am going through the same thing myself. And BELIEVE ME if I knew of some miracle cure I would enlighten my fellow Maysters. I am a Dermatology Physician Assistant (like a Nurse Practitioner) and have extensive experience with this condition. We receive referrals for it all the time and it is frustrating because I have to tell people what I just told you!! Good Luck!!!

I have lost 117 pounds since my surgery May 6th and have been problems with hair thinning for about a month. It has slowed down since I started the vitamist Folacin, 2 biotin tablets a day and two prenatal vitamins. I am also trying to be very kind and gentle to my hair and only shampoo every other day. I swim 2 times a day and I Keep it up in a clippy and protect it with infusium leave in conditioner. But every shampoo and hair brushing it still comes out. I am going to buy some of the shampoo and treatments and give that a try. Sally's has a generic version of the expensive treatment in a set for $14.95. Its shampoo, conditioner and treatment. The girl there swears by it. So I am gonna try it. Laura
