Well, soda's probably gone forever

I have been keeping hope alive that one day I could return to having a soda now and then as I have always enjoyed them. Today, I tried a swig of diet soda for the second time since surgery and if anything, it was worse yet than the first time I tried it. Yuck! The carbonation hurts my mouth and my pouch said "uh, no...I'm not doing that again, you hear?" I'm bummed. I love soda and would have enjoyed a Diet Rite or two now and then.

I was so addicted to Diet Coke that I never plan of trying soda again. I drank about 8-12 cans per day. I quit smoking, drinking Diet Coke, caffine and alcohol for this new chance at a new me and so far it is working. Sometimes I think my body might just fall apart from all this healthy living! Jen

Hello Tom, I did alot of research and there are some doctors that allow soda and mine doesn't. I too dreamed of one but never tried even a sip so you telling me this has made me think twice. I do have a friend who is 2yrs out from surgery and she drinks soda and she says she lets it sit a while so that carbonation is gone she still enjoys the taste. Maybe not gone forever but for a while.... Lori

Thankfully I wasn't a big soda drinker pre-op, but I've heard of some people that just MUST have it post-op and work through the discomfort to have it again. I just don't understand it. "She Who Must Be Obeyed" (my pouch) is the boss of me now! I don't want to **** her off on purpose, that's for dern sure!! Michelle

I must admit I have a sip of my husband's diet soda once in awhile and it doesn't seem to bother me. I keep it at very very small sips though. I can live without it though. I drink Orange Juice if I want something different than water and thats about it. Oh wait, I did have a bit of milk last night. I think I am craving calcium, I really need to get off my butt and find me a calcium supplement!! BTW, your pic is awesome Tom!

I must admit that I too was a diet soda addict prior to surgery. I went through a terrible period of withdrawal from soda/caffiene prior to surgery. I weaned myself off of it about 3 weeks prior to surgery - didn't want the withdrawal headaches! I have tried a few sips of diet coke/pepsi and they do bother my tummy. I have tried diet Mountain Dew - it has less carbonation (MD has less carbonation than other diet sodas) and leave it open and sip it throughout the day. A can will last me 2 days and satisfies my craving for the soda. But - the cola varieties I can't tolerate - too much pain! Jean

Tom, In my WLS program, they say that drinking diet soda is the kiss of death for maintaining weight loss. I don't know if it is true or not, but, don't want to take the chance. Lori 384/313/170

I think it's amazing how much I dislike soda now. I used to have several diet sodas a day. I tried it twice since surgery and I completely agree with you - It's terrible! So bubbly and sharp. It makes me think that we must have had to train ourselves to like it in the first place. I am done with soda, and probably a lot better off without it.

I've kind of been craving a diet soda now & then. I, too, was a big diet pepsi drinker preop. Well, last week I took a sip of my husband's and, yay!, it tasted awful. Now, I'm not craving it! I was so glad! Now, I drink water, crystal lite or propel. The carbonation didn't hurt, the taste was just awful! Maybe later you can have some now and then. For me, though, I just want to stay away from it.

I do miss my soda and I don't think we will ever be friends again.
