Drat...Osteopenia!
Had my bone scan (Dexascan) today and while my lumbar spine has remained the exact same as my last bone scan just under two years ago - unfortunately my hip didn't. I've lost 4.1% there an that puts me into the osteopenia category. I'm not thrilled.
I should say that it is unlikley that any of this is from my WLS. It is from my malfunctioning parathyroid glands (they regulate calcium). My parathyroid hormone has been elevated a few years therefore my calcium has been elevated a few years. It isn't severe and I've not had any kidney stones or anything.
My doc/endo was "watching" it but it puts the question of just what in the heck should my calcium intake be if my blood calcium level is high. I've now seeing a new endo and his inclination without seeing the blood work, Dexascan and my 24 hour urine collection (which I've yet to do) - is to just monitor it. I am highly concerned about this. I do not want to get into the osteoporosis zone. I do not believe we have a history of osteo in the family.
Anyway, I don't see the endo til late next month and then we'll see what he suggests. The reason for elevated parathyroid hormone is normally a small benign tumor on one of the 4 parathyroid glands. Who knows.
BTW, I did read that weight bearing exercise and strength training helps fight osteopenia so I'm glad I do stuff and will work hard to do it more regularly.
Kathy aka the calcium kid
Kathy, I'm sorry that this is happening to you!! My family has had the opposite problem - we are 'over-calciumed', LOL! My mom has several bone spurs in her back, shoulders, and feet so she has to watch her calcium intake. We have 'too dense' bones in my family - which again - makes me one of those 'big boned' people.
