Scizophrenic Digestion?

Since I am essentially the baby of this group I will ask you all-- Are you still suffering from Digestion that literally varies from day to day? You know where what you ate yesterday won't stay down today? Can you eat chicken, fish, red meat? I am finding I have trouble with chicken and fish, but red meat, including steak and lamb stays down ok, and things that I ate yesterday will come back up if I eat them today. I often have very low tolerance for artificial sweetners, too, which is a real problem, since I have recently begun to dump on sugars and fats. Needless to say, it is very frustrating. Any suggestions? thanks Shari Lap RNY 262/220/??

I like that description...scizophrenic digestion. I think I'll use that. Thanks! Yes, I'm the same way. It's very frustrating when I think I've found something that will work for me, only to have it make me violently ill the next day. I am not allowed to eat red meat until I'm 6 months out, but I do eat chicken (when I can tolerate it) and fish (same deal). Wish I had some suggestions. It'll be interesting to see if anyone else has some. Julie

Hey, Julie Thanks for the reply! My dietician told me to avoid red meat till 6 months, too, however she also said it was because it was often difficult to digest. I tried some very moist lamb, and had no trouble, so I experimented some more. Have no trouble with steak, lamb, potroast, etc, as long as the meat is moist. On the other hand, I have had chicken soup bother me, due to the chicken chunks. (Go Figure!) Essentially my dietician said, if it stays down, I can have it. Only problem is, it will stay down one day and not the next! Hope we get more answers, tho"! Shari

Your not alone in this. One day to the next I am not sure what is going to be tolerated or not. Sometimes I wonder if its all in my head and I am just getting bored of some of the food and mentally physicing myself out. For several weeks there all I could tolerate was tuna and I hate tuna. Now I can't stand looking at it after a really bad bout with the porcelain goddess. Chicken for me is all about how moist it is, I can never tolerate leftover chicken. Steak, hmmm, sounds yummy, but likewise tummy yells no!!!! I can tolerate some days very lean ground beef when pureed with sauce. Suggestions, hmmm keep your chin up, things will eventually settle down. At least that's what I am being told. I am sticking with that hope. ---Sabrina Good luck

Thanks, Sabrina! It really is nice to know that I am not unusual in this! Patience is a virtue, and I am learning to be virtuoust the hard way! I guess I will just keep trying things, 'till I know what works and what doesn't. Shari

Shari, I have had the same problem, somthing I eat now I cant eat later, also steak and fish are the ONLY meats I can keep down, chicken forget it! I even have issues with fish at time and tuna no way. Steak is the one thing I can eat and have never had a issue with, go figure the one they say is the hardest on you. I am not real fond of artificial sweetners so I just dont do much of it I do try to find regular items with low sugar like recently I discovered Life cereal is not bad in sugar(I look for things 10 grams or less). Now some people have very low sugar tolerance so this may not work for you or them but it has worked for me so far. Good Luck! Cary

Thanks for the info, Cary! Fortunately I do have some sugar tolerance! In fact, I am more likely to feel like dreck if I eat high fat foods, than I am with sugary ones! Trouble is that I am having trouble getting all my fluids in. Sometimes water doesn't sit right. So I keep looking for drinks that I can tolerate. Having some luck with aspartame sweetened drinks-- but most of the commercial ones also contain acesulfame K. As for splenda, it is tolerable in SF popsicles (Tropical flavors, YUM!) but I can't stand the stuff if it isn't frozen or nearly frozen. Somehow it seems wrong to eat an entire box of popsicles, daily! Thanks for all the imput. Since my entire family are "statistical anomalies", It is nice to know that this is not unusual. Shari
