Am I doing this right?
Hi all!! Right now, I am 3 months out. I am about 57 pounds down. I am really happy with that, but i am having a heck of a time w/the whole eating properly aspect of it. I don't eat any junk food, RARELY eat any fast food....I will admit to eating a chicken whopper, minus the lettuce, tomatoe, and bun. I can't seem to get in my protein, or my vitamins. Everything seems to make me ill. I can smell the taste of the Viactiv that I was taking. Crazy...I know...When can i start taking a regular vitamin pill, instead of the chewables? And is there somewhere or someone out there that can tell me some great high protein recipes? I know that I need to stay away from the carbs, but I need to work on one thing at a time, and I feel that my vitamins and protein are priority right now. I think that once i start eating more protein, then i won't have room for the carbs...am I wrong to think this way? I worked really hard to have this surgery, and I am so afraid that I am screwing it up...gggggggrrrrrrrrrrr this is so frustrating!! Any suggestions, personal experiences will be helpful. Thanks so much. Heather
Heather, I agree with Carol, you really need to make an appointment with your Nut. If you're not already doing so, start keeping a food diary you can share with him/her for review. Also, Fitday is a great way to track your intake - maybe you're doing better at protein than you thought. Also, by recording it, you become more accountable.
As far as the vitamins, I know they suck, but gag them down. If you get sick from a vitamin deficiency, you'll be wishing you had put up with them.
Good luck!
Dear Heather,
Read your post and have different frustrations but similar emotions I think.
The responses indicated you should talk to your nutritionist. I kind of laughed and said to myself... what nutritionist? I don't have a nutritionist.
If you are in the same situation, would love to hear from you. Curious about how one finds a nutritionist. We get SOOO Much information here on the boards, I have a pretty high expectation for this nutritionist I will find.
I need more information than just
Eat your protein first
Drink 10 glasses of water a day
Monitor portion sizes to meet your physician's requirements
Don't drink water.
Balance the calories, carbs and fats
Include all of your vitamins, b-12 can't be absorbed normally now etc.
Beginning my search today through obesityhelp.com reference page.
Hi Heather! Im sure you are doing this right! My first impression is.....why do we worry ourselves sick over carbs? We NEED THEM! Its not a diet you are on. Its eating to live. You cant be healthy and live off of 1000 calories a day without getting in nutrition. Just think......when you used to eat nearly 4000 calories, now then you should count carbs and fat, but we arent there. We need to eat to live and be healthy.
My program calls for this.......its a guideline, some days will be better than others. If I have a salad with chicken, I eat the chicken first then the rest is as I can tolerate it. But at least I got my protein in first.
2 multi vitamims
Calcium 1500-2000 mg
Carbs 100-125 g
Calories 800-1200
Fat 20-25 g
Protein 70-100 g
Liquids 64 oz (this includes sf popsicles, pudding, jello, yogurt)
I get so tired of all the people who say walk more, drink more, eat more protein! yikes! When Im emotional to begin with and Im struggling, that is the LAST thing I want to hear! Im doing the best I can......and you are doing the best YOU can! It took us many decades to get to where we were so unhealthy that the insurance company said.......yup, she needs this surgery and we will pay for it. Our habits are not going to change overnight or even dramatically in 2-3 months. But they will get better and we are that much closer to our goal to be healthy each time we drink that extra bottle of water or eat our protein first. Remember also, carbs are not the enemy here. You need them for your brain to function properly. Research it a little. You will be amazed at what good carbs do for your body. Can we eat alot of them? nope, but each month we will get more and more in. We need them.
One more thing. There is a HUGE difference between a Nutritionist and a Dietician. The clerk at the health food store can call themselves a nutritionist but they dont have the education in food and bodies that a Dietician has. Check with the surgeon you had and ask them for a referral to a Dietician that you can work with. It makes a HUGE difference. Also, some nutritionists that work for some surgeons, again, are not educated in proper diets, they simply are employed by the surgeon to promote the surgeons diet. Sometimes they work and other times its not a good fit for you and the way your body is responding to surgery.
Ok, my soap box is put away. Sorry this is so long! Hang in there! Have a great week!
