Doctor visit!
I just finished visiting my doctor and feel absolutely upset and depressed. I really need a pick me up.
I had surgery May 24, and am 52lbs down since then. I went in for my check up with a positive attitude thinking the doctor would say, hey you look good and things seem to be working. Well, I was wrong. The doctor said he was disappointed in me and that I am loosing slower than anticipated. He said I should have lost alot more. He questioned my snacking habits and exercise routine. I really felt he was blaming and accusing me of lying to him. I never eat between meals and have strictly stuck to his plan only to eat three meals a day. If anything I am still not getting all that many calories. I get 500-550 calories a day, equaling about 12-20gr of fat, and 15-20gr of carbohydrates, 60-80gr of protein. I drink 72-96 oz of water per day. I exercise 6 days a week. I do water aerobics for 60min everday and walk 30-45 minutes (2miles) every other day.
My only thought is that I was a very active person before the surgery and that my metabolism must have been zilch......
Sometimes the doctors can dish out the information but do not realize that this process is not easy and does take alot of work. I work my butt off everyday and still I got told I don't do enough and need to do even more. My first thing I did when I left was cry in the car....another failure in my life I had thoughts of just giving up, but once I got home I thought about how can I let someone have so much control over me and put me down for something I know I am working hard at. Several hours later after going out to a happy movie I went to the gym and worked my but off.
I feel better now, but wonder how are the rest of the Mayers doing. Am I really that far behind others?

Hey sabrina your surgeon sounds like a jerk. I had my 3 mos check up today and I have onley lost 57 pounds since surgery. My surgeon is very happy with that. I lost 22.5 before surgery as well. He says the average person only loses between 10-15 lbs. Just keep up the good work remember muscle weighs more that fat and with you working out so much you are bound to be getting muscle. Just remind your self like i have to that it took years to put this weight on and it is going to take awhile to take it off. I am down from my presurgey weight of 411.5 to 332 lbs. I have not been 332 pounds in over 13 yrs. That is a big step. I do have a lot more to lose but I know that i have to have more realistic goals. The way it sounded was this was just going to fly off faster that it is now but i think in the long run this is better. Maybe I won't look like so much of a sharpie when I am done. Because I want more kids I feel i should wait untill i am done having kids before i prusure plastic surgery. You are doing good just keep your head up.
Well, just MHO, it sure sounds to me like you are doing ok! My surgery was 5/23 and I'm only down 40 lbs. Everyone loses at different rates. Girl, I think you are doing just fine and just keep doing what you're doing and you'll make it. So what if it takes 18 to 24 months instead of 12. You will probably have a lot less skin issues if you lose it a little slower anyway. So try not to let this guy get you down, rejoice in what you've lost! Heck you are only about 10 weeks out, that is an AVERAGE OF 5.2 LBS A WEEK! I say YAY for you!
That doctor ought to be smacked or something!
You are not failing. 52 lbs in 3 months is awesome! Just awesome! There are too many variables into this to figure out how much each person *should* be losing. It really isn't fair to compare people.
I started at a lower starting weight and lost 32 lbs prior to surgery but since surgery a few days before you...I've lost 38 lbs. The weight isn't flying off but I surely hope when I see my doc next month he is happy because I know that I am. Sure, I'd be happier having lost 50 lbs thus far but I'm accepting what this body gives me.
You are not behind anyone! You are your own person and your own machine. Keep doing what you are doing. Keep yourself hydrated and fueled and eating what they tell you and the weight will come off!
Hugs, Kathy
I am only down 44 pounds and my surgeon told me that slow is better so that way the skin can catch up with the loss. I wish your doc would have thought before he spoke...
I know I wanted much faster results, but I am not one of those lucky people who gets what they want! lol Good luck to you and keep on keeping on! 52 pounds is gone forever and he cant make you feel bad about that accomplishment! Way to go girl!

Sabrina,
I just came from my doctor's visit as well. I'm a little over 10 weeks out. I lost 20 lbs just before the surgery and 42 since. My doctor is very pleased with how I've done. I hate to weigh in. It screws with my mind. My blood pressure actually increases before I weigh in! But, I don't know why because my doctor (a woman) is great. I had the exact opposite experience of what you just described. I'm so sorry about that. You are doing much more exercise than I am. Although, I'm steadily improving. I personally think you aren't eating enough. I think 900 calories a day is a good amount to shoot for so your body isn't in starvation mode!
Just my opinion. But, I think you are doing great!

Humph. That doctor stinks! Maybe he should think that if he's not satisfied with your weight loss...HE failed! YOU are doing your part!!!!!!!
Maybe you should zip him off an e-mail. Heck, attach a link to this thread and let him read about what an @$$ he was. Maybe he's unaware. He should be made aware of it so he doesn't do the same thing to other people.
My doctor is very goal oriented too. At my 6 week follow up he didn't congratulate me on my loss, but rather said, "you're about where you should be, but...."
They're just clueless.
Stay strong and keep up the great work. With your attitude, I'll bet you'll be one of the success stories in the long term, and then he'll be wanting to use your pictures for his slide show at orientations!
