Ughhh... Absolute Worst...

I've had a pretty remarkable recovery - felt really good from the get go, very minor food intolerance, etc. I've had a couple episodes were something hasn't agreed or didn't sit well and came right back up, but it was no big deal, lasted 2 minutes, came up, felt fine. Tonight, I was eating a Lean Cuisine and took a bite of chicken. It was about a 1/2 inch cube (typically, I'd chew up a piece that big and swallow it in two swallows). It was so hot, I just automatically swallowed it WHOLE... Oooohhh GEEEEZZZZZ.... I sat for a minute thinking "What am I gonna do???" but it didn't feel TOO bad, so I took a couple of really small bites of broccoli and another bite of chicken and then WHAM!!! I spent the next 30 minutes in the bathroom, praying harder to throw up than ANY drunken night in my entire life. I threw up everything BUT that piece of chicken. I spit probably a cup of foam... I was the absolute most miserable I had been since just a few hours after surgery... Finally, I felt the chicken go through. Luckily, it was EXTREMELY soft. After hanging on the toilet, crying in my DH's lap and swearing to NEVER eat anything solid again, it went through... and I feel much better, but definately not ready to try anything else to eat tonight. I think I'm just going to go to bed... Thanks for letting my cry.... Becky The idiot with the cannon ball in her chest...

Becky, Keep some papaya enzyme handy. It is the active ingredient in meat tenderizer. It is a life saver. It will help digest what is in your pouch. Chew a few when things are sitting quite uncomfortably. Funny you mention Lean Cuisine. My husband Rich's first throwing up spell came from eating a Lean Cuisine. He threw up in a trash can at work, in the car on the way home and when he got home...all until the offending piece resurfaced and he felt immediate relief. Get some rest, Sweetie! Be warned...your pouch may be tender tomorrow so take it nice and easy. Hugs, Kathy

I was actually thinking of you Kathy.... "Why didn't I buy any of that (*%)&#$(&@#$ papaya stuff Kathy's always talking about... ()*#$(&@#($&)" I feel a lot better now, just sort of drained, and not too adventurous. Tomorrow's going to be a light day, for me, and today ended up being a meal short... oh well...

Hmmm...someone thinking of me as they barf...now there is a thought! I keep a little pill carrier in my purse with a few papaya enzyme tablets. Needed them today after a piece of chicken escaped and went down my throat. Didn't feel too great. Was eating just as someone came into my office to ask a question and *poof* it got away. Chewed a few tablets which helped. Didn't feel 100% but didn't barf either. Soft foods tomorrow, okay? Good night! Kathy

Becky I had a bad dump episode the other day off of chicken too. I thought I blew up my pouch from throwing up because it hurt so bad. That was first thing in the morning on friday too. For the rest of friday and all day saturday I just did liquids and have been adding regular stuff back in today. I hope your pouch feels better soon.

Dear Becky, I used to say when that happened to me it felt like I swallowed a brick, but yeahhh... feels like a cannon ball in your chest... Oh man on man... I have never had a sugar dump, but too many foamies. One good thing... I bet you lose a bit of weight tomorrow... I notice that when I had bad foamies... I don't feel like eating ANYTHING and many times it is reflected in weight loss. i HATE that feeling... Wish you well. ps: they need one of these characters holding a toilet bowl... just doesn't give the picture justice sometimes.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. It happens to me now and again, mostly from chicken, hamburger, or steak, and it stinks. Funny though, it hasn't happened since I got the papaya enzyme. It's like my pouch has an evil sense of humor!! Anyhow, should it act up like that again, I'm ready!! Go gentle today. You may still be a little tender. Best, Dina

Thank you Becky! I thought I was the only WLS patient who couldn't tolerate chicken. You would think it would be okay if you chewed it up, but nooooooo....I have tried it every way including a good ole' Lean Cuisine...and I was pukin in the porceline!! This is crazy though, I tried a chicken ring from White Castle, and it actually chewed up and went down okay. But, the greasy foods don't settle real good on my pouch. Anyway, I have been having little bits of mashed potatoes and gravy lately. It may not be the best thing for me, but it is the only thing that makes my pouch smile! Oh, and because I wanted a treat really really bad, I had a small slice of Sara Lee French cheesecake, and unfortunately (ha ha), I didn't get sick! So I will have to be careful not to indulge too much. Hope your feeling better!!

Thanks everyone, for your responses and advice. I'm feeling much better today. I am, however, being absolutely neurotic about taking teeny bites and CHEWWWWWING. I'm also going to go track down some papaya enzymes. Thanks! Becky
