Hey guys, what are some good protein bars that you have tried? I mean really good ones! I have tried EAS Advantage Peanut butter and chocolate. It's o.k., but the aftertaste after you chew and chew and chew takes like cardboard. Which ones have you all tried and enjoyed. Thanks!!

Some of the South Beach Diet breakfast bars are good, a little chewy, but the flavor is good. I have a chocolate one in my desk: 140 Calories, 45 from Fat Total Fat: 5 gm Total Carbs: 15 g Fiber 3g Sugars 7g Sugar Alocohol 3 g Protein 10 g Slimfast makes a carb conscious (Opti - something) and they're like chocolcate chip granola bars (the soft kind). I just bought a big box of Pria Carb Selects. I've tried the PB and it was awesome! The Caramel Nut Brownie (also in my desk drawer!) has: 170 Calories, 70 from Fat Total Fat: 8g Total Carbs: 21g (kinda high for my tastes, but I use them only in emergency situtations) Fiber 2 g Sugar 1 g Sugar Alcohol: 17g Protien: 10g HTH! I LOVED the Pria bars pre-surgery when doing my low-carbing. I haven't ventured into bars yet post-op. I'm not sure sugar alcohols and my body get along so I'll have to ease into that. Kathy

I'm not a big protein bar eater - I try to stay away from them, but to be honest, eating for me is getting harder and harder. When the cafeteria has nothing to offer (that I can eat)for 5 days in a row other than tuna salad in the salad bar, and I'd rather NOT eat than eat that again, I'll do a bar. Lately, my caloric level has been dropping. I'm trying to up it in the evening with a glass of 2% milk or something, but not only am I just not hungry, I REALLY don't wanna eat. I'm thinking some of it is the heat, but over the last few weeks, I've dropped from averaging about 800 calories a day to barely 500. Anyway, the point to all that rambling was, sometimes the protein bars are the only thing I can force myself to eat and I refuse to allow myself to skip meals...

Becky Sue, Can you bring something for lunch? My staple lately is deli meat. Turkey or ham and cheese. I get it shaved and boy that goes down nicely. I figured it was a decent source of protein. I'm not eating enough to be worried about the salt in it. I just roll the ham and cheese or turkey and cheese and take a bite. Quick, easy, no thought involved. Funny how I really could care less about food these days. I eat my 3 meals every day. I do not skip meals just like you. I know I need the fuel. I care more about what I eat on weekends but during the week - doesn't matter that much. Kathy

Yeah, I can bring my lunch, and sometimes I do. Lately, I've been a lazy streak though. Get up at 5:30, rush around to get ready, get the baby up at 6:15, out the door by 6:30... I barely have time to take my vitamins and mix up my shake! I could do it at night, too, but sometimes I run solid until I fall into bed and the while laying there, drifting off, I think about all the stuff I shoulda done like make my lunch for the next day... Seriously, I do try to take my lunch, but I haven't been able to get myself out of bed before 5:30 for the last couple of weeks. I run in cycles, though. I'll go for months getting up at 4:30 and then I'll run into a patch where I'm lucky to drag myself out of bed before 6... The appetite things getting really bad though, I think I'm going to email my Nut. I ate about 1/2 a protein bar for breakfast because I didn't feel like an egg for breakfast and even eating 1/2 was a chore... Who ever thought I'd not feel like eating to the point I'd actually not eat?

I know what you mean about appetite! Lately, I just am not motivated to eat. I eat because I'm supposed to sometimes not because I have an overwhelming appetite. When I get home at night, I could care less about eating. And normally that would be my more munchy times - the more trouble period of time. But not now. I definitely eat more on the weekends. But that is more a social thing with my husband. Kathy

Hi Kathy, I tried some of the bars and the alcohol sugar made me sick and I also has a mini dumping syndrome. I am staying clear of those for awhile longer. Jane

Jane, I haven't dared go near those bars now that I'm post-op. I want to wait quite a while. They are convenient - that is for sure. But sugar alcohols I'm just not so sure about now. Time will tell. Sorry you had a problem with them. Kathy

Hello, I like the protein bars that Cosco sells. They are called Premier Protein bars, they have 30 to 31 grams of protein in them. They come in a assocated box of 12, chocolate peanut butter, double chocolate crunch and yogurt peanut crunch. Calorie count is 280, but it's entire meal. Sugar alcohol is 2 to 8grams, net carbs is 10 to 15 grams. I have also tried Fresh Energy bars made out of Reno Nv. They come in a variety of flavors and you can order them on line at www.freshenergybakery.com. The one to look at is called Protein Extreme, 42 grams in each one, 11 grams of carbs. Most people in my support group like these ones the best. Elaine
