Alcohol Anyone?

Ok... I know what the Dr & Nut said (usless calories, rapid absorption, yada, yada, yada). Have any of you Mayer's had a drink or two?... I'm going on vacation this week and would like to be able to sip back a few. I'm afraid to try my normal drink of choice (Amaretto D'Sarono on the Rox), too much sugar. A glass of wine or some frozen concoction sounds mighty good right now.... Let me know about your experiences... Kate Z

Frozen concoctions are all made with sugar based mixes. Beware! Good luck, Kathy

I was cleared for alcohol at 6 weeks, but no carbonation and no sugar. I have had one drink - I mixed gin with CL lemonade. I wouldn't do it regularly because of the empty calories, liver issues, etc., but I felt okay. However, they weren't kidding about your tolerance level going out the window. I had about a shot of gin in a 25 ounce shaker of ice and lemonade and sipped it all evening and felt it. I wasn't falling out, but my tolerance to alcohol is nowhere NEAR where it used to be.

I would beware. Is it worth having possible liver damage, vomiting because of the sugar, or feeling like cr** because it gets you drunk faster? To me it is not worth it. If I am out with family or friends and they are drinking, it does not bother me if I see them drinking. If it really bothers you, maybe you can take a blender with you and make your own things without all the sugar and alcohol. By the way, I thought the whole purpose of having this surgery done, was to be healthier and not ruin what we all have started and have accomplished already. Why pu****

Whow Alisa, I AM being aware... I haven't heard of "possible liver damage", and I'm not looking for a cheap drunk. It doesn't bother me to "not" drink with others are drinking. The whole purpose of having this surgery was to live a longer, more normal lifestyle than I could being morbidly obese. I am not out to sabotage my efforts. I am just asking if anyone has tried alcohol yet?... I assume you haven't. A normal lifestyle, in my opinion, is anything in moderation. Everyone has to define their own goals and objectives. Have a great day....? Kate Z

I totally agree- my surgeon said he wants me to do things I did before- not punish myself for the rest of my life! We need to live a normal life, and a drink here or there is normal!

Hi Kate, I agree with you. My goal is to be a normal person, not a skinny person who doesn't live life as opposed to an obese person who doesn't live life. The liver damage being referred to is real, to a degree, and you should be aware of it. Rapid weightloss (from any means) puts your liver into overdrive trying to flush out all the fat, waste, etc. Alcohol, as you know, also puts a strain on alcohol. Therefore, if you were to drink regularly and heavily, yes, you would be at a much higher risk of developing liver problems than someone at a stable weight. Like you said, everything in moderation, and of course, with your doc's blessing... Becky

Hi Kate- I'm going to Kauai next week and wanted to have a ****tail, too. My surgeon says he'd rather me wait, but one or two would be ok. I bought some no-sugar mixes- margarita, mai-tai and blue raspberry martini mix. But I'm afraid to try them! I did have a sip of wine last week and wanted to go to sleep immediatly.

Have fun on Kauai, Great destination.... I'm going to Captiva (Gulf Coast). Keep your fingers crossed that Hurrican Dennis makes his run quick and west. I've heard about alcohol effecting you quickly. I have not heard any other warnings. I know that high sugars can make you dump. What I was looking for when I posted to this board and my State site, was first hand accounts of peoples experience with alcohol. If 9 our of 10 people say that they got sick as a dog... I'm not an idiot, I don't have a problem with learning from other people's mistakes.... Maybe I'll bite the bullet and pour myself one tonight just to see.... Enjoy... Kate Z

Hey Kate, Like you mentioned moderation is key. I've actually had a couple of drinks...a margarita, a rum with diet coke, a glass of wine, and about an oz of Dominican Rum. (Different Occasions of Course) I tolerated all very well, and I try to stay away from the sugars and carbonations. The only difference is 1 drink=drunk! Girlfriend, have yourself a little sip of something and see how you do. Have a wonderful vacation!
