Update on pain

My doctor is finally back in town and I had my appointment. Okay be aware I am going to whinnnnnnnneeee Friday I went and saw the on call doctor because I was having sharp stabbing and pulling pains right left of my belly button. The doctor's advice was take some tylenol and use a warm cloth on your stomach. Yah like that helped any. On saturday I ended up in the ER, after four hours of being poked and prodded they told me my tests came back great and that I was fine. So what's up with pain. They told me they were not sure and to wait until my doctor got back into town and to be on bed rest. I finally saw my own doctor and he immediately identified it that I most probably had a tear in my abdominal wall from my internal sutures. He stated sees alot of this from his patients who have had this surgery. So, why couldn't these other doctors say this instead of making me feal it was all in my head and that I was being a baby....... At least the good part was I met my first goal of dropping below 300lbs. Yippee Now to whine about my doctor. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem? My doctor is very conservative. He told me no pills until he tells me I can and that I would be on pureed for the first 3 months. Well today when I went to see him he asked how solid food was doing. I was shocked. I told him what he had told me before and he stated he figured I would be on solid. Which I can't even imagine being on since alot of food doesn't begin to agree with me. (6weeks postop) I told him I was still having problems trying to up my meals and that I was drinking a protein shake to help up the protein. He was FURIOUS with me. He stated I shouldn't worry about my protein. (if I don't I am only getting maybe 30gr) He said NO protein drinks. Doesn't believe in them. So what do I do if I can't stomach more food? I guess I best stop. Sorry for venting..... I just had to get some of this off my chest. ---Sabrina

Sabrina!!! Hi there! Im sorry to hear about the pain and Im sorry to hear the doc's couldnt figure it out and you had to wait. Sometimes I wonder where some of these people get their degrees from, I mean really! Anyway, glad you doc found the problem. What is he going to do to fix it? Im curious. As far as the protein drinks go........heck, there are like 12 different surgeons in the Phx area (where I live) and each one of them have their own theories and their own programs. Im amazed that some dont do protein. If I could say anything it would be this. Keep trying different foods, when you find some that work for you, just go with those for a while and try to bring in something new every week. Do you keep a food journal? Fitday.com is good, it tracks protein, carbs and calories.....oh and fat also. But I use it because on my program we are to get 70-100 grams of protein in, 30-50 fat and like 120 carbs, and between 800-1200 calories. Keep your chin up girl! You are doing a great job! I love reading your posts, you are so supportive of others. Know that this will be a good thing in life! I support you all the way! Carrie

Thank you Carrie for your support. Sometimes one just has to vent. For the abdominal wall tear the doctor states it will heal with time on its own. ---Sabrina

Hi Sabrina I might have mentioned this to you before but I wanted to let you know that I have a really hard time with protein shakes so I've been getting my protein in with yogurt (low carb, 3 oz at a time) and with 1% milk (4 oz at a time). I have had a really hard time with food but found very small amounts every 2 hours have really helped me. Also, any chicken dish made with a gravy seems to set pretty good. I wish you much success. I know with me, I have stopped losing weight because I can't get any amount of calories in but I just take one day at a time. And BTW... whine all you want to dear... you have the right after what you have gone through!! Congrats on being under the 300 mark... that was a joyous occassion for me too Barb

I can understand you painwise. Three weeks after my surgery I too experiences severe stabbing pains in my abdominal area (more so around my largest incision) when I moved and walked. I had to hunch over holding my abdomen to get around. I too went to the ER where my surgeon met me. He said it could just be pain tolerance, a tear like you mentioned, nerves that were almost nicked or several other things. I was given 8 lidocaine shuts followed by 8 shots of something else (it hurt and I remember a the needle bumping into my ribs). The next day I was absolutely pain free!and have been since then. It's a pain isn't it. I'm glad it's over for me and I wish you a speedy recovery. Sorry you're having meal troubles. My doc is into protein drinks in the beginning and when on pureed he's just 'alright' with them. So I get most of mine from food. I hope you find some things that agree with you. And keep on venting if you need to.
