Beer

Hello Mayers! I plan to have 1cluster of Dungeness Crabs today for dinner. I would usually cook them in a can of beer (before WLS). I know that we CAN NOT HAVE ALCOHOL for the first 6months to a year. But do you think that I can steam my crabs in beer? Or do you think that I should just steam them in some water and leave the beer alone?

The alcohol in the beer cooks off so you should be just fine. Some doctors say "6 months" or "1 year" without alcohol and some folks that means that once that deadline has been reached that it's a-okay from then on out to imbibe as much as they want. In reality, as a post-op alcohol is very, very hard on our livers and will always be. Also due to absorption issues we are now "lightweights" meaning that alcohol will hit us harder than in the past. Everyone has to talk to their doctor and figure out what is best for them. Kathy

My doctor told me that I can has a glass of wine every now and then...but not more than one every night. He didn't say anything about beer, but I have had some Club soda with a little vodka at a bbq last weekend. It doe**** you a lot quicker than it used to. I was definately feeling it. But I agree with the past poster...alcohol burns off when you cook...so go ahead and use the beer, it will just add a little flavor. Have fun!!!! Diane
