Well, I just found out I was 3 weeks preggo when they operated on me. I had RNY on the 25th of May. And I was forced to take a pregnancy test the day before surgery! I can only assume it came up negative! I am now almost 7 weeks pregnant. I have heard of people getting pregnant right after, but anybody pregnant when they had surgery? I am soo worried! My surgeon's office doesn't think it is important enough to see me this week, and my OB can't see me for 2 weeks! I went to the ER on saturday with a bladder infection, they came back and told me the news, then did a blood test and an ultrasound to confirm. I am soo scared at what having surgery while preggo can do to this baby!! Brandi

Brandi, I don't have any answers for you. I would try posting this on the main message board and see if anyone there has any answers. I do have a hug and a prayer that all will be ok. Hugs, Kat

I hope you will excuse this humble male for posting on this completely female subject, but like you I would be very concerned. Main concern would be the nutrition of the baby. It's hard enough for you to nourish yourself, let alone the baby. I would suggest you and the baby should be monitored VERY closely. Another concern, of course, is the strain on your abdomenal muscles. Hopefully by the time that's an issue, you'll be pretty well healed. I certainly HOPE that the pregnancy test was a false negative and not that they simple did it and didn't check it. I can't imagine they'd have proceded while you were pregnant. As hard as it would have been for you to wait another year, it would have been far safer for both of you. I offer all my best thoughts for you and the baby. We all want to see you both thrive in your new life (lives, that is). Joe D. Distal RNY (open) 5/9/05 Dr. Iqbal 446/385/199*

I did want to get pregnant, but not til I was done with school (in 3 more years). I am excited, and worried, of course. This is my first. I didn't think it was possible, I was told my hormones were out of wack. But I want to make this work! For those telling me I should have waited, can I just say this... DUH!!!! And I wasn't planning to go into surgery already pregnant, this was an OOPS baby, k? BIG OOPS. But it's here, and it's mine. Thankx! Brandi

Weel girl you are in my prayers for sure. I do know that if you are anywhere from 3-4 weeks pregnant (before a missed period) the little thing doesn't not emit enough HCG (what makes the test positive) and makes the test negative. I also know that the first 13 weeks of life (and especially the first 8 weeks) the baby is amazingly protected. My friend had her gall bladder removed via lap a few years ago and the week after found out she was also 3 week preg. during surgery. Caroline is completely healthy. My only worry is nutrition of the baby. You are in my thoughts and prayers for sure in any decision you and/or your doctors have to make. Take care of yourself.

Oh no!! I can't believe that your doctor can't/won't see you! I was told that I would automatically be high risk after surgery to make sure I got enough nutrition and such in. There is no way your OB/GYN can get you in with the cir****tances? Please, please keep us posted on how you are doing!! I've not heard of anyone in your situation, so I have no advice for you other than to nag until the doctor's get you in! Take care and get lots of rest, ok?
