Hi my name is Depsy. I had Lap RNY on May 13th, 2005. I lost 30 pounds in the first 2 weeks, but not a pound in the 3-4th week. As a matter of fact, I gained a few pounds back. I dont understand!!!! Today is my 4 week post op date. I'm eating regular foods except beef, pork and bread. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on what I could be doing wrong? thanks, Depsy

Hi Despy, Platueau's are totally normal, so don't freak out. Your body is just adjusting to the new food, and your metabolism is in shock. A platueau can last a few weeks so don't be discouraged. Just make sure you are getting in at least 64 ounces of fluid, and 60 or more grams of protein (my doc says 100 grams). Take your vitamins and walk and exercise. Increasing your exercise and fluid will get you off the plateau. Watch your calories, fats and carbs. Hang in there! I was on a plateau from week 2-4 and I finally just started losing again. It is frustrating but just keep focused on the long term goal. Slow and steady is much healthier than fast. Good luck. Deanna

Welcome to our family, Depsy!! When I came home from the hospital I gained 2 pounds and kept it on for a little while. I eventually started losing again, though and now 5-1/2 weeks out I'm down about 35 pounds. Just keep doing what you know you're supposed to and stay off the scale. Let your doctor worry about the #s!

I am going through the exact same thing... finished my second week out at about 25 pounds down, and now nothing's happened for a week or 2... So frustrating, so scary, so disappointing! But there's a long way to go, and we can do this. With how little we're eating, there's no way we can't be losing weight. Silly me, I didn't take measurements before the surgery, so I can't see if I'm losing inches when the scale isn't moving. And I must admit I check like twice a day to see if the scale's moving yet...

looks like we had surgery the same day. I check the scale alot too. Are you eating regular food yet? its nice to know that I'm not the only one going thru this.

Hi Depsy, You're not alone. I had surgery (open RNY) on May 16th. I lost 18 pounds in the first 2 weeks and then hit a plateau. I lost nothing (up/down a pound or two) for almost 13 days...was getting a bit concerned. Then....all of a sudden yesterday and today I lost 2 pounds each day....plateau is broken. Hang in there...your plateau will break too. Make sure you're getting in your protein and water. They say if you don't get enough, your body goes into starvation mode and hangs onto everything. If you're up to a little walking, that won't hurt either. I'm sure you'll be dropping some pounds again soon. It's inevitable! Good luck. Sandy

It is very normal to have a plateau this early out. 30 lbs is alot to lose in 2 weeks. Your body is catching up with itself. The weight loss will pick up soon! Best wishes, Kathy

Hi Depsy: Welcome !!! You're not doing anything wrong. I'm finally coming to that conclusion myself. I had LAP RnY on May 24th. Lost 16 pounds in the first week and a half and nothing since then. Matter of fact, I gain a pound...then lose it....then gain it..... Now, I'll admit I don't get all my protein in every day and I've heard that makes a big difference. But your body is in shock and taking a breather. A girlfriend of mine who had her surgery two years ago came to visit today and gave me a pep talk. She said she would hit a plateau every few months....her first was 3 weeks after surgery....and she'd get frustrated. But she's lost 95 pounds so I know it works !!!!! Hang in there. I am in the exact same boat!! This coming monday is the start of week 4 for me and I have been at 231-232 for about 2 weeks now! I started up at 259 and lost 11 lbs BEFORE surgery - so I am really only down about 16 lbs since surgery. I know that I will lose it all evenutally so I am just keeping up with my 3 meals a day and a protein shake. I guess I finally realized that I'm not in a big rush to lose it - its all going to come off anyway, so I'm just going to hang in until it does!! 259/248/232/125 preop/day of surg/today/goal
