Hey everyone. My date was May 23. I was in ICU for several days then regular room for a few more. Was released on Memorial Day, one week after surgery. I developed a thrush/yeast infection and can't swallow without extreme pain. SO.. not getting the liquids in, and had to resort to putting 1/2 a bottle of Aquafina in the G Tube. Feeling like a failure for that, but can't help it that it hurts to swallow, right... CAN help it that the medicine they gave me to combat the infection tastes so gross that I gag and retch, and am afraid of popping staples... so I'm swabbing instead of swishing and swallowing. Am still on full liquids, have staples taken out on Monday... then start on pureed stuff I guess. I'm feeling.... like....WHAT IN THE WORLD HAVE I DON"E?? Shannon

Awwwwwwwwww Hang in there!! I spent my second night in the hospital tossing my cookies all night and felt the same way. There are still times that I feel that way and I am a month out! I think it comes with the territory. It will get better! I hope that you get to feeling better soon, but do try to get some liquids in, any way you can! You don't wanna be back in the hospital with an IV. You'll be ok, and we're all here to help when you need us! Just hang in there and do the best you can! You aren't a failure! You're doing the best you can for the situation that you're in! You're doing fine!!

If you have a G-tube put the medicine in that way also and follow it with 2 oz of water. If you don't smell or taste it you won't throw up!

Think I can do that? I thought the Nystatin was only to be taken orally so it contacted the infected parts of the throat. If you think that would work, maybe I'll try that!! Anything to get better faster. (Well almost anything....) Still don't wanna drink it. sigh. Shannon

Hi Shannon, I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time. I know every day how lucky I am for getting through this so easily (so far!). Just do your best to get your fluids in, even if you have to use the G-Tube for now. You're not a failure! You're a survivor. Give the medicine time and your thrush will go away and that alone will make you feel lots better. In the meantime, lean on us for support! Feel better soon! Becky

I know the nystatin is yucky. You can ask your MD for mycelex troche which you suck on...it is better.

Shannon, I don't really have any words of advice for you all I can do is offer you my support and of course my shoulder. I know you're going through a rough time right now, and may even be regretting the surgery. Listen it does get better I promise!!!! I had to go back into the hospital 3 weeks out for vomiting couldn't hold anything down I thought it was going to die!!! After I had an endoscopy done they discovered that I had an ulcer After about a week of going back to clear liquids i'm now doing much better and eating probably more than I should;) Hang in there talk to your dr and see what he thinks is the best way to handle getting in your fluids YOU MUST GET YOUR FLUIDS IN!!!! I was sooooooooooooooooooooooo dyhydrated when I went back in the hospital so much so they couldn't hardly give me an iv. Just take it easy on yourself and btw you're not a failure girl you're a loser!!!!!!!;) Kriss
