May 2 surgery date- is this normal?
Okay, the first week I was able to keep everthing I took in down, the second week I cheated, and ate stuff I wasn't quite suppossed to start just yet, (like eggs and cheese) but kept it all down no prob. Now, it seems as though no matter what I eat, I feel so sick afterwards, and, I can not keep my eggs down anymore for nothing. I just get this uncomfortable queasy feeling after every time I eat, and it almost makes me just not even want to bother. Does anyone else get this after eating. I dont think it is dumping, I just feel so miserable. also I am sooooo weak, & tired. I am dizzy when I stand up, and I am afraid I am not getting in enough protien, but my program at kaiser does not want us using protien shakes.
what are you first week of may post ops eating now?
- Thanks, Angie
Hi Angie
Sorry to hear you're having problems. My surgeon is rather conservative as well regarding advancing stages. The first week I advanced from clear liquids to full liquids (skim milk, cream soups, thin hot cereal, thin pudding). I've cheated a little bit on the full liquid phase (cottage cheese, very soft eggs) but had no problems at all so far.
What concerns me is your protein thing. Did they forbid the use of shakes? It's very important to get enough protein and virtually impossible in the early stages without supplementing. My doc has a kinda "as necessary" stance on them, and I feel it's necessary to use 3 or 4 a day. (I've done my homework!)
You should communicate your concerns with your surgeon and see if he'll clear you to take protein. I'm not saying it's gonna solve your particular problem, but I bet it will help. Best of luck!

well my program just wants us to learn to eat our protien, and not drink it. They want us to learn to eat right, and not use protein shakes as a crutch. I just worry, because I am only eating 3 two ounce meals a day, so I try very hard to make them all mostly protien, but I really doubt it is enough. Especially now that I cannot keep eggs down. so its mostly tuna and fish for me. Thanks for the concern, and the advice. If I get too bad I think I may order some sample protein shakes just to see if I feel better with them.
Thanks,
Angie
This may sound like a dumb question, but are you remembering not to drink during or right after your meal? That can make a difference.
As far as you doctor not permitting protien shakes - that goes against what many doctors preach. Protien is extremely important to us in these beginning stages, and because of our malabsoption, the shakes are the best way to get the most protien. You would definitely question him about it again.

I know exactly how you feel. I am going thru the same thing right now, but with me it is everything...what I eat OR what i drink. I am so nauseus all the time and hate everything. I make myself eat and drink but then feel nauseus for hours. I hope you find out what it is because no one has a clue with me. I have also been in the ER for trouble breathing yet every test comes back perfect. So who knows maybe I am just crazy!! Good luck hun and let me know what you find out!

I had my surgery on the 3rd and I could eat anything,I know I'm not suppose to but But I just cant eat eggs at all. But about the protein,I've never heard of that. I know people who are with Kaiser and they need to have protein drinks. How do they expect you to swollow any type of solids so soon. It took me 2 weeks to be able to eat (I know I'm not suppose to) YET. I hope you feel better.

I know I'm only 5 days post-op and I'm not even eating any foods as yet, just liquids. What concerns me is you say you feel like the food is stuck. You also say you are weak and dizzy. I'd be scared of some sort of blockage. If it were me, I'd call my DOC, and ask if that could be a possibility. Best of luck, HUGGS
I had the same surgery date as you. With me, I can never tell from day to day what will stay down and what won't. Eggs are on my diet plan, but I have a hard time with them now. The first week or two was ok. Now, no way! They wanna come back up. I'm scared to eat sometimes, to be honest and I make sure I am home when I do eat.
I eat a lot of cottage cheese and add some crushed fruit, like pineapple and pears (light syrup, canned). There is protein in the cottage cheese. Are you allowed protein powder? A friend of mine added it to SF chocolate pudding (you could try a different flavor). She could add 1-2 scoops a serving to make sure she was getting enough in.
I also drink V8, which has a tad of protein in it. Drink milk. Mostly, though, I am on cottage cheese. I can't keep meats down (turkey, chicken). I am allowed tuna, but haven't even tried. Haven't been that brave!
Hang in there! If this keeps up, I'd check with your dr. I am having some of the same issues. One day something will stay down and the next it won't.
