Speaking of protein...
I'm now 2 weeks post op and drinking 2-4 protein shakes a day. I had always heard that they should be made with water and as little water as possible. Well, even though I chose a few shakes whose taste I like pretty well, the thickness is starting to get to me. Yesterday I made a protein drink with a full glass (probably about 10 ounces) of water so it came out thinner, like chocolate milk. I added ice cubes. I found it refreshing and much easier to drink. In fact, it was gone in 5 minutes! What's so wrong with that, I ask?
I've not had surgery yet, but will this Thursday. When I saw my dietician I'm pretty sure she said I could make my protein shakes with milk. The milk adds extra protein. Are you intolerant to milk? Just wondering, now it has me wondering if I'll need to make my shakes with water. I guess I'd better ask.
Here's the basic shake formula I was given:
1/2 cup skim milk, soy milk, or water
2 scoops of the vanilla protein powder (they gave me a list of suggested powders)
about 1 cup ice cubes
and flavoring ingredients (optional)
Measure the milk and powder into the blender. Add ice cubes with additional flavoring. Quickly pulse the blender on and off until blended, creamy, and frosty. Can make with with half the ingredients if you can't drink the whole amount.
for the extra flavoring, some ideas given were:
1 banana chunk
1 tsp maple extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 pineapple cubes
etc
No, I'm not intolerant to milk - I love milk! But it does add a few grams of naturally occuring sugar (lactose) that many of us choose for forego, and the whey protein powder I use is predigested and thus more bioavailable than that in the milk. Still, I don't see milk as a problem.
I am just getting tired of the thick and frothy shakes (at least for now). I'd rather have mine lighter.
I wish you the best of luck on your journey!
I hate the Isopure almost as much as the shakes. It tastes like medicine, and I have a hard time keeping it down. I am getting a few ounces a day down, though. I have to go easy on all the phony GNC stuff or I just puke it back up. Makes more sense to me to eat bean soup and yoghurt and keep it down. I got the okay from my nutritionist to do this.
