Long time reader, first time poster Just a quick question. I'm going to have RNY with gall bladder. My expected hospital stay will be 2 days (surgery Tuesday morning / home on Thursday). My father-in-law is having open heart surgery the same day in St. Louis. If my surgery goes as planned, how mobile would I be at the end of the week? (Friday/Saturday). I would like to visit him and show support (he has supported me a lot during my process). The trip would normally take 2.5 hours. There would also be many opportunites to stop & walk if needed. Am I being overly aggressive in my thinking? PAX CHRISTI Joel

Hi Joel, 15 more days for me. I don't have an answer to your question. But I have an opinion. If it were me, I wouldn't take the trip. I don't know but that it could stress you so soon after your surgery. Is there anyway you can mail him a card, right before you go into surgery, and say I am with you in spirit, if not here in person? Just a thought. Lisa

Hey Joel, I can appreciate your desire to be there for your dad.......but as a pre-op person who is scheduled for the 24th of May and who has gone through the pre-op education classes....and a cardiac RN.....I wouldn't plan on it. I will have a g-tube in post-op for 2 weeks, the surgical site(s) and post-op weakness....all contribute to a lowered immune system and high risk of infections....you and your dad will also have a lowered immune system.....so both of you need time to recuperate b4 you expose yourself to another hospital's germs. Send your love and let him know you both are on a journey to enjoy a long future together. God Bless! Sally
