Drama

Sometimes I just don't have time for drama whether in the 3D world or my cyber world. Was reading a few main board messages that went awry. Oh my goodness. I'm just sitting here shaking my head. Then at work we have someone who quit. His last day is this coming Friday. He is a histrionic type ("the sky is falling, the sky is falling"). He was known as the town crier as news breaks, he goes office to office to tell though he has backed off on that. "Do your work instead of monitoring the wire service, okay?" He is a disaster. So while it is good news he is leaving though that leaves us with a big void in the drama arena... wouldn't it figure that his leaving would yield some drama? How fitting. First of all he resigned last week. We learned that last Friday he was upset that no big announcement of his impending exodus was sent to the team. We've never done it before, why would we now? Mind you it's been a few years since anyone has left. Great job retention on this project. The next phase of drama is over someone wanting to do something for his leaving. She came to me and suggested that we take a collection and give him a gift card. I say "No way, no how. We've never given "parting gifts" to someone who leaves and we are not going to start now." Of course, the fact that virtually no one would donate anything and how does one get a 25 cent gift card anyway? I'm not joking. This man has stepped on toes for several years and if we invited his friends to a party it could be held in a phone booth. This one gal (who doesn't know him as well or as long as most of the rest of us do) now wants to get him a cake. Many of the other staff do not want to feel obligated to put on a happy face and wish him well. They want to do nothing except wave as his drives away. No one wants harm on him but... No one wants to be put into a position of being a hypocrite. I honestly share some of these feelings. If a card was purchased that said "We'll miss you"... i couldn't with good conscience sign it. If it said "We wish you well" - I'd be fine with that because I feel that way. Egads, the rest of this week is going to be a mess... Kathy

Kathy, I so understand this! I have a very difficult employee who is an excellent programmer, but, I'm sure has OCD and is deaf, he has a cochlear implant. He does not get along with anyone at the office. He is convinced everyone is out to get him. I do everything I can to try and reassure him, because again, he is an excellent programmer, but, he sure takes a lot of energy. Yesterday, he came to the office late because he said he had a magpie in his fireplace and hasn't been able to get it out for 2 days. I asked some of the guys who live in his area if they would go over to his house and help him out and no one would! I felt bad, but, I know he has brought this on himself. Drama. Lori
