OT: Lice
Liv has lice... uckkk...
She took a shower last night and I found them when I was combing out her hair. I've never had lice before in my life and neither has Holden. I've got a MASSIVE case of the heebie-jeebies... We spent FOUR FREAKING HOURS combing through her hair last night after the RID and that was after I chopped 4 inches off her hair. It broke my heart to do it but she had hair to the middle of her back and I just couldn't see trying to get through all that hair...
We've done about a billion loads of laundry and I've sprayed just about everything that holds still... It doesn't look like Aaron or I have them, although I'm treating myself tonight, just to be safe. My skin is just crawling... not from lice I don't think, but the THOUGHT of them. Aaron just got his summer 'do' - shaved head - so I don't think it will be a problem...
AARRRGGHHHHH!!!! This is sooooooo NASTY!!!!
Ewwww, I've heard of them but luckily have never seen 'em.
(Though I did have moth larva climbing up the wall in my bedroom at some point in my young adulthood - they were in the bird's food... found out afterwards it was best to freeze it first to kill anything off.)
Hopefully all your hard work has gotten rid of them (with the RID).
I'm sorry you had to spend your day dealing with that, hon!
Hugs, Kathy
Okay, so something funny just came out of it...
I treated myself with RID, just to be safe. I've had Aaron look twice but to be honest, he's a man, and I don't trust him to not be paying careful attention. That stuff is gross, let me tell you... So, I wash my hair with the crap, according to the directions on the box and then use the evil little "nit" comb to go through sections of my hair to see if anything turns up. Let me tell you, that thing HURTS! At one point, I almost broke into tears thinking I found a nit on a piece of hair that damn comb pulled out... turned out, it was the follicle, I was pulling my freaking hair out by the roots with the stupid thing...
Sending many sympathies your way. As a Kindergarten teacher I've seen it all. This is probably the FIRST year ever I have gone through a year without having a case in my room. It's usually a 2 or 3 a year and it's yucky. I only had them as a kid once (from school) but that's it. I"ve seen them and it just makes me itch all over thinking of those little suckers. Nasty! People think only dirty people get infested but actually lice like clean hair because they can hold onto the hair easier...oily hair makes them hard to glue their eggs on. According to my daughter's pediatrician, this is why Afri-Amer. don't get it...due to natural oils and other oils they use to keep their hair soft and managable.
YOu're right thoug...Nasty!
Wash all beddings in HO****er and keep checking heads!
Becky,
My sympathies to you. I've never personally had to deal with lice, but I've had friends at work whose children got them from school. One woman really struggled with getting rid of them in her children. Finally her Dr. recommended covering the children's heads with mayonaise, real not fat free, and covering it with a plastic bag for several hours. Apparently as Ana mentioned they can't live in the oily environment.
Good luck! (I'm kinda itching just reading about it, so I understand how you must be feeling)
Big hugs!
Wanda
Morning, Wanda! You're up early! I bet that mayonaise treatment is REALLY good for their hair! I remember when I was a kid washing my hair with mayo as a conditioner...
I've now become an internet-expert on lice... Just like Kathy when it comes to self-diagnosis, I immediatly hit the web. Apparently, Lice can hold their breath for quite a long time, so I bet the mayo probably helps smother them, as well... I'll have to try that if this doesn't do the trick...
I'm STILL itching and that's after having Aaron check me about 4 times and treating myself anyway... If there's anything that absolutetly makes me ill, it's stuff like that... I can remember watching Fear Factor and thinking, I can do all the stunts. I can eat all the really gross stuff... but OMG PLEASE NOT THE BUGS!!!!
Have a great day!
Yuck... Now that I'm itching all over....
You may want to let her teacher/care provider know... she's getting them from somewhere and she can get re-infested very easily.
There was a time that the school actually had to have the nurse check the first graders for a whole month before they'd let them in class... One kid kept bringing them back in...
Kate Z
Yep - first person I called... So far, none of the other kids have it, or at least no one's copping to it... Holden doesn't have it, I don't have it (had my doc check today, wanted a professional opinion) and Aaron doesn't have it... Wracking my brain trying to figure out where she got it... Not that it matters, it happens, it's a kid thing.
When I went to my doc today among other things I needed to go over, I told him about Liv and asked him to check me. He asked if I've been itchy and I said "Yeah, starting when I found the little buggers..." he thought that was pretty funny. I didn't, I've had a SERIOUS case of heebie jeebies all weekend...
