travel fears

Tomorrow is 6 months since my surgery. I've lost around 100 lbs. Thursday I'm flying from NYC to Phoenix to visit an old, good friend for 12 days. I'm not especially worried about the food there as she is sensitive to my needs and concerns. My problem is the trip itself--90 minutes to the airport (getting up around 5:15 AM), two hours at the airport, seven hour flight with lots of time zone changes, and then an hour to her house. How do people manage food in these situations?

Sara - I have to travel a lot for work. I make up a survival pack for each trip. I take things that are high protein and won't spoil. I had a train ride from DC to Boston a month ago that took 11 hours! I was fine. I pack enough that I could eat 1-2 days off it and be fine. Not that it's a whole lot of food. You can always replenish at your destination. The disposible Glad containers come in different sizes and they are very handy and light weight. Things I pack: Jerky - I usually take a bag. Spray Cheese - it's not a great choice but it travels well. Veggies - Baby carrots work for me. Fruit - Apple, Pear (things that travel well). Soy Crisps - for the cheese and add a little crunch. Nuts - a few again just for chrunch and bit of fiber & protein. Water - Most places now water is easy to get, so often I don't take it.

Hey Sara, We vacation a good bit and I realized on my last vacation that I was feeling run down on day two. I MUST pack protein that I can get on the go or I don't do well at all. So, with that said...the top of John's list is also the top on my list...beef jerky. I also ate something I wouldn't normally eat at home like low sugar protein bars. I even bought me some Zoic can protein. I also take along almonds or soy nuts. Good luck and have fun on the trip. Christie

Hi all you folks on the go -- don't forget my favorite: string cheese, in those individual 1-oz wrappers. They stay fine for a long time even if not refrigerated.

Thanks for posting this question. My hubby and I are flying to London in the end of December and I have been wondering what to take. This gave me some good ideas. I was already planning on taking a soy & peanut snack bag that has 14g protien per bag. Can be super sweet, but I eat little bits throughout the day when I have to drive long distances. Thanks!

As a truck driver, I feel i can answer this question. I pack alot and i mean alot of those little microwavable meals that u get at walmart. They have a little poplid. Dinty moore and chef bor ardee(sp) make several types. and Walmart always has fresh fruit (canalopes, mellon, grapes) in the plastic containers, they last several hours without a fridge.
